I took some time tonight, closing my eyes and taking in the sounds around me. I thought back to when I was a child, growing up in the country and all of the new and wonderous things I experienced. To be honest, it made me a little bit sad to think how seldom I take the time to pause and experience and enjoy these things as I used to find such joy in. It made me feel a little bit ashamed that I needed a holiday, an excuse if you will, to take a few moments and remember how wonderful our planet is.
Hopefully, with this year, I can strive to remember the importance of such beauty and wonder. Starting with Earth Day, I will endeavor to be more aware - to appreciate this planet, it's beauty, and to remember to give thanks for all these simple and yet wonderful things. Will you join me?
Giving Thanks This Earth Day
I give thanks for the beauty of the solemn oak tree,
The birds overhead, whistling tweetle-tweetle-twee,
The cicada who buzz with their never-ending drone,
The flash of white-hot lightning and the mighty winds that moan.
I give thanks for the gentle rustle in golden wheat fields,
For the serenity and beauty, as well as the harvest that it yields,
For the perfection of a pinecone or the sweet taste of honey,
For the autumn when maple syrup flows, so good and pure and yummy.
I give thanks for the wonders that I never get to see;
Like the when the baby bird takes flight, the first time from his tree,
Like how our world is constantly changing, in this darkness that is space,
Like how so many creatures evolve - even the human race.
I give thanks for all the beauty and all the wonderous things that be,
I give thanks for all of you and for the chance to just be me,
I give thanks to Mother Earth, today and every day,
I give thanks for the chance to urge you to give thanks this special day.
