Giving Thanks for My Home(s)

All of My Life I Have Lived in Places that Have Sheltered Me Well

R.C. Johnson
A poem that I read yesterday by fellow YCN writer Delicia Powers stirred up memories within me of the many places that I have called home. Her lovely poem is entitled "A Journey's End" - her description of the poem on her content page is "A poem...harbor home."

Both Delicia Powers and her husband Mike Powers write frequently about the love that they have for the area where they live, and their "dream house in the woods." Here is another of Delicia's poems: "Winter's Promise," which has the description "A poem of the refuge of a woodland winter home."

These poems have made me ponder on all of the homes where I have lived. Ticking them off in my mind as I write: my childhood home; my college dorm room; the home that two friends and I rented when we were teaching; the apartment where my spouse and I lived when we were first married; our first home that was built with much sweat equity on our part; the home that we bought in a suburb of my city, and the townhome in a different suburb where I now live in the current phase of my life.

These homes have all been quite diverse in nature, all of them modest but not lacking in the things that I need. They have shared another common denominator: all of them were (are) happy homes that carry a warm place in my heart.

All of my life I have lived in places that sheltered me well, and with people who treated me in a respectful and loving manner. "Home" to me means roots, refuge, harbor, shelter, security, protection, comfort, familiarity, happiness, contentment, caring, peace, and love.

I wish from the bottom of my heart that everyone could relate words like that to the homes where they have lived, although I know that is not possible.

Thank you, Delicia, for the poem you posted yesterday that set these thoughts in motion for me. It reminded me that I am blessed beyond measure - today I am giving thanks for my home(s).

Thank you, RC, for this beautiful article about home, and the blessings it offers. There is so much truth in the old saying: "Home is where the heart is." And a special "thank you" for honoring Delicia with your words. You are a wonderful friend.

I like your definition of home. I'm sure you were a big part of what made each of your places of abode a home.

It sounds like you have bounced around about as much as I have. Although I can't say that all of my homes were happy ones. That's another story.

I have been happy in 3 of my homes, but not all of them. Some have really bad memories for me.

Amen sister. You and Mike as well as Delicia seem to be in tune with the Holy Spirit. Wow. I give thanks for YOU R.C.

I love the powers of both Powers'--Delicia's and Mike's--words. They speak of the sentiments of home that I share. Like you, I've had many. I'm grateful for the comforts that accompanied them all.
