Gizmodo Leaks Features of the Upcoming iPhone

Will the New iPhone Live Up to the Hype?

Donna Moore
It's been a busy April for iPhone fans. First, Steve Jobs unveiled the features of the upcoming OS 4.0, and then a misplaced prototype of the next iPhone turned up in the hands of online mag Gizmodo. While Jobs was generating excitement with his presentation of the newest features of the operating system, the misplaced iPhone was a mistake that allowed Gizmodo to leak the specs to the world. They have since returned the phone to Apple but the proverbial cat will always be out of the bag on the specs. And while it looks very similar to the familiar iPhone owned by many Apple fans, these improvements are enough to make many an iPhone geek - myself included - clamor to get one of the first on the market.

Camera

I love taking pictures with my iPhone and I only have the 3G. The leaked features of the iPhone show a bigger camera lens, though Gizmodo could not turn the phone on to see how it worked. It does have a camera flash, which will be great for inside shots.

More impressive, it has a front-facing video camera for chats. This will be very useful for showing someone where you are, such as when on vacation. Or I can image being in a hardware store, standing in front of a display of what-is-its, and not knowing exactly what what-is-it my husband wants. Power up a chat with hubby, point the camera at his choices, and voilĂ , the correct what-is-it is brought home.

Larger Battery

The biggest complaint, other than network choice, that I have with the iPhone is the length of life in the battery. Gizmodo claims that the new iPhone's battery is 16 percent larger, which will hopefully give it a longer life. Though the new phone will also need more battery to power its newest features.

Higher Resolution

The folks at Gizmodo hooked their new-found toy to a computer and discovered that it wanted to boot up through iTunes, but was locked by an app that renders a lost phone useless. They could, however, see the familiar boot-up screen and from that discerned that the new phone will have a higher resolution. It has been leaked that it will be a 960 x 640 pixel ratio.

Micro SIM

Most phones use a SIM card for transferable memory storage. The standard now is the Mini SIM, but the compartment for the leaked iPhone is for a Micro SIM. This is important because it means that Apple is making way for more features and a bigger battery in a case that stays relatively the same size.

Another feature that Gizmodo leaked about the newest iPhone are two buttons where the volume button now is. There is speculation that these are two volume buttons, but one may act as a shutter button for the camera, something the iPhone does not have now. There are also two mic jacks at the top of the phone, one which could be for noise cancellation.
