Glam Rock-Inspired Makeup Look

Sarah Afshar
When it comes to the "rocking" the Glam Rock Inspired Makeup look, there are a lot of things to envisage. Although Glam rockers are highly notorious for wearing dark shades and bright colors, in order to achieve this look, one must be able to identify what glam rocker is. Glam rock is more than just a lifestyle and personality, it's a statement. One of the ways this statement can be achieved is with the right makeup. In fact, being a glam rocker is one thing, but becoming one is another.

One may think or assume that glam rockers wear a lot of makeup, however; that is not always the case. In fact, despite the collaboration of heavily visible dark shades and bright colors, often times glam rock makeup is applied in moderation. This does not mean that glam rock makeup is natural. In actuality, it is anything, but natural. For the Glam Rock Inspired Makeup look, I am going to be applying the makeup subtlety, yet noticeable on more of a dramatic wavelength. Let's get started!

First and foremost, you want to begin by applying your foundation primer generously all over your face. When you are producing any inspired look, although primer is optional, it is very important to use primer when you create a look that is influenced by dark shades and visible colors. In the case of the Glam Rock Inspired Makeup look, that is so. Primer works as a great sealer, which allows makeup to last long. Primer also allows your makeup to refrain from creasing or flaking throughout the day. There are numerous foundation primers in the beauty market today. A good foundation primer is definitely Laura Mercier's Foundation Primer.

Once you have applied your foundation primer, you want to focus on applying your foundation, as well as, concealer. Depending on your skin type, as well as, skin tone the key to create this look is layering until you achieve the effect you want. Foundations come in array of different types that vary from liquids, powders, creams, etc in a variety of formulas such as waterproof, oil-free, moisturizing, etc. Depending on your skin type and the benefits you want from the product, you would need to choose wisely. If you are one that doesn't wear foundation or wears minimal foundation, than I truly recommend something like such as a mineral based makeup. If you are one who needs heavy coverage, then I truly recommend a stick foundation. Concealer is entirely optional, however; it is beneficial, especially to the Glam Rock Inspired Makeup look. Much like foundation, it also comes in a variety of formulas.

I am going to use Mac's Select Cover Concealer in NC42. Using a concealer brush, I am going to apply the concealer. I don't use much concealer, because I don't want my face to appear chalky, as if I am wearing a lot of stand-alone face product. The foundation that I am going to use personally is "Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation" with SPF15 in Golden 6. This foundation is a light-to-medium coverage and blends into my skin, like a second skin. Using a foundation brush, I am going to apply this all over the skin. Then I am going to take a cosmetic sponge and simply blend the foundation all over my skin. I am then going to take a translucent powder and apply it all over my face. You can use whatever concealer, foundation, and powder you choose and what works best for you.

You want to take some powder and apply it generously under the eyes, as we are going to start on the eyes. The powder will prevent fall out from making it's way to your face and tarnishing your foundation. Once you have accomplished this, you want to apply eye shadow primer all over the lid, as well as, under the eye. As you know, primer is essentially important for the prevention of fading and creasing. If you are unsure of a good eye shadow primer, I truly recommend Urban Decay's Eye Shadow Primer Potion.

The shades that I am going to use today are simple. For my darkest shade, I am going to use a simple matte black. My favorite matte black is definitely "Carbon" by "Mac Cosmetics" which I intend to use, however; you can find a matte black anywhere, at any price. I enjoy Mac's eye shadows because they are highly pigmented and possess limited fall out. For my neutral shade, I am going to use "Couture" which is a dark brown matte. It is by "LancĂ´me" and is available within the Color Design line. Any dark brown neutral matte shade will do. For my lightest shade, I am going to use highly pigmented white shimmer. I have decided to go with "Bobby Dazzle" by "Urban Decay". You can find a variety of alternatives that match this shade. The lightest shade is the only shade that will possess any shimmer or sparkle in this look.

Once you are done priming your eye lids with the primer, you want to apply the neutral shade all over the lid. This will be the matte brown shade that I had previously mentioned. You don't want to go passed the crease, but you do want to pack on the product enough that it goes a towards. Any regular eye shadow brush will do. I am going to use one by E.L.F. that only cost me $1 and works just as good as some of the high end brushes. Do not blend.

As you continue, you want to then apply the darkest shade. In the case of the Glam Rock Inspired Makeup look, we are going to be using a matte black. Using an angled brush, take the black shade and apply it top corners of your eye going slightly passed the crease. You want to add enough product that it is highly pigmented. I love using Mac's 275 brush which is the medium angled shading brush because it works the best. Do not blend.

Once you have consummated this, you want to begin to use the lightest shade. This shade will be the white shimmer shade. Using an eye shader brush, you want to apply this shade (and today I am going to use Bobby Dazzle by Urban Decay) from the crease up to the brow bone. Then you want to go down towards the lid and apply it from the tear ducts about 1/4th into the eye. Pack it on generously, but do not blend.

Using a crease brush, you want to take your neutral and dark shade and apply it in the crease, all the way across towards the tear duct. As you proceed with the Glam Rock Inspired Makeup look, you then want to use that same brush and apply it as a liner on the bottom area of the eye. Do not use this on the waterline.

Are you having fun yet? Once you have completed this, you want to begin blending. Taking a blending brush, you want to blend all of the areas that need blending. The outside corner of the eye, the crease, and the area the highlight was applied near the tear duct. When you do blend the darkest shade (or the matte black) you want to blend inward, creating a smoked effect. A blending brush is a great necessity to own and today I am going to be using Sephora's I.T Blending Brush. Remember if you over blend, you can retouch later. Using a foundation brush, you want to brush the excess powder you applied under your eyes, of which prevented the fallout from tarnishing your foundation.

One of the most important key factors to making the Glam Rock Inspired Makeup look come to life is definitely the liner. I spent 10 minutes alone contemplating and debating what type of liner I should use, before I realized that I need to use two different types. The first one I am going to use is a gel based liner in a matte black. I have decided to go with Bobbi Brown's Long Wear Gel Liner in "Black Ink". What I will do first is apply it over the top of my eyelid. I will not use it on the bottom nor on the waterlines. I know some people love tight lining (or lining the above waterline) with gel liner, but I prefer not to.

I am, then, going to take a stand alone pencil liner and line the bottom of my eye. What to use, what to use. I have decided to use Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide Pencil in "Oil Slick", which is a nice shimmery black that possesses silver glitter reflects. I will, then, take a blending brush and kind of smudge that liner in with the eye shadow that is already on my eye. I will, then, apply the pencil liner to my waterline, followed by my top waterline. Tight lining is completely optional. In fact, if you have sensitive eyes, I truly do not recommend it.

Applying lash primer is completely optional. I have decided to apply it, as I am creating this look earlier in the day and plan on leaving the house in a few, without knowing what time I will get home. One of my favorites is definitely Shiseido's lash primer. Mascara is one of the greatest beauty essentials in the world today and is definitely a product that must be used when creating this look and making it come to life. I absolutely love mascara and today I am going to use a rich, black mascara. I have decided to go with Diorshow's Iconic Mascara in "Noir". I find that the thicker the brush, the more dramatic your lashes can become. A real reason to appreciate this mascara is the fact that Dior is well known for creating the best mascaras in the world. Although, I have never used false eyelashes, however; if you want to use them, you are more than welcome to do so.

When it comes to eyebrows, I try to keep them simple, yet dramatic. Although most glam rockers love to dramatize their eyebrows, I like to keep them relatively simple, but dramatic. You want to use anything with a pigmented, yet wax base. If you are wondering what I am referring to, you must check out Benefit Brow Zings. In fact, I decided to break out my Benefit Brow Zings in Dark.

Blush is not an option, when it comes to the Glam Rock Inspired Makeup look, it is a must. Most glam rockers are notorious for using bright, yet bold colors, however; I am going to take a step back and use a color that is visible, but not overly dramatic or extreme. This is a look that is wearable for everyday, not just at night or at parties. For this look, I am going to use blush that is shimmer, but more so on a rose pink wavelength than red. Any blush will do, however; I am going to be using "NARS Blush" in "Taos". Using an angled blush brush, I am going to apply this all over my cheeks. I am also going to apply this throughout my "t-zone" area, but not as much as I have applied on my cheeks.

Red lips are most important, especially when it comes to the Glam Rock Inspired Makeup look. In fact, the lips are what make the Glam Rock Inspired Makeup look what it is. You want to first line the lips with a nice red lip liner. I have decided to go with Make Up For Ever's Aqua Waterproof Lip Liner in "Red 8C" which is a stunning true red. Keep in mind there are numerous alternatives to this shade. As you continue, you want to apply lipstick. The lipstick should be matte and if it isn't, it should be heavily pigmented to the point that it is half matte. I have decided to go with my favorite red lipstick for this inspired makeup look is definitely "1 Le Rouge" which is by "Yves Saint Laurent" This lip is a nice blood red matte with satin reflects. You can use just about any alternative, within just about any makeup brand.

A musical genius, glam rocker named Farrokh Bulsara once quoted "The Show Must Go On" and that it, shall may.
