Glee is Back! Review of Glee Hello

Joyce Carole
I have to admit that I am a very recent follower of Glee. I had sadly overlooked the show when it first started airing in the fall. Last night's episode, entitled "Hell-o", the first new episode following a four month hiatus demonstrated why the word "gleek" has made it into the English vocabulary. Episode 14 of Glee was good on many levels. Let me go through what made my list of reasons why Glee is a show that should not be missed.

Glee's Big Musical Numbers

I noted just twenty minutes into the hour long episode there were already three musical numbers and all three were really good. The theme of Glee episode 14 was "Hell-o". Glee club savior, William Shuster instructed the Glee club members to each choose a song to sing that had the word, "Hello" in it. It wasn't long before high school jock and glee club member, Finn Hudson was on his feet performing a quite good version of the Doors classic, "Hello, I Love You". That song was followed by Glee favorite Rachel's Berry heated version of "Gives You Hell" and then by a duet to Lionel Richie's "Hello" was sung by Rachel and Glee Club rival, Jesse St. James. The couple's inspired duet sung at the piano in the school library was my favorite musical number of the night. I would be remiss not to mention the big number later in the show that had all of the Gleeks singing a rendition of the Beetles classic "Hello, Goodbye". The musical numbers in Glee are reason enough to watch the show, but they are certainly not the only reason.

Glee's Story Line and Romantic Entanglements

While I am not as familiar with the prior Glee storylines as most of the other gleeks out there, I have to say that Glee episode 14 weaved together some interesting stories. First we have the unlikely romance between Finn and Rachel, who suffered a breakup during this episode. Then we have Rachel entangled with rival Glee Club's Jesse St. James, with the overtones that he may be using the young and vulnerable glee club member. We have the fledgling romance between Glee instructor, William Shuster and the cute but wacky, Emma. Finally we have the drama behind the evil cheerleading coach, Sue and her desire to end the school's glee club.

Glee's Witty Quotes:

I started making a list of the quotes from last night's episode that had me chuckling. Here are a few of my favorites in no particular order, though I have to admit that shows that rip on former Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin get special bonus points from me.

Blonde cheerleader did you know that dolphins are really just gay sharks?"

Sue: "Right now you have enough product in your hair to season a wok".

Sue: "You two may be the dumbest teenagers I have ever encountered and that is saying a lot. I once taught a cheerleading seminar to a young Sarah Palin".

The Clothes Worn by the Glee Cast

While I am too old to dress like one of the high school gleeks, I do have to admire their sense of style. Rachel Berry had some adorable outfits on last night's episode. From the cute Argyle cardigan and red bow mini to her red blouse and black floral skirt, she is one glee club member who knows how to dress. Expect the black dress with the white bow that the girls wore during their rendition of Beetles classic, "Hello, Goodbye" to be selling out at Target. The dress is actually a black formal dress sold at Target for just under $14.00.

Jane Lynch's Sue Sylvester

My final accolade goes to Jane Lynch, who brilliantly plays evil cheerleading coach, Sue Sylvester. Her performance alone is a good reason to watch Fox's Glee. She is evilly entertaining and has some of the best lines on television.

I will admit I am fast becoming a convert to this energetic new television show. Am I a "Gleek", perhaps not yet, but I am willing to put in the time each Tuesday night to get there. If you have not yet watched Fox's Glee give it a shot. In my opinion, Glee is television at its most entertaining.
