Glee Episode 3 Has the Guts

Robert Dougherty
Glee Episode 3 was a crucial episode for the new hit, as Glee Episode 3 didn't come with the hype of the May premiere or last week's official season premiere. Glee Episode 3 had to keep up the momentum of the first two episodes, as it officially settles into its first season. To do this, Glee Episode 3 let some of the older cast members get up on stage, brought in a couple of special guest stars, and amped up the usual "we are unique and special" life lessons learned by the Glee club.

Glee Episode 3 united all these plot devices with the theme of confidence and having guts, just as episode 2 had the overarching theme of compromises. In the confidence department, Will's was shaken after he couldn't get the glee club's choreography down pat, and Rachel - with some suggestions from the "cheerios" - wanted to hire an ultra-demanding choreographer to help.

So Glee Episode 3 took its title "Acafellas" from the a capella group Will forms while away from the glee club. The surprisingly talented group of teachers, including Ken Tanaka and creepy ex-glee teacher Sandy, even get a visit from Josh Groban as himself - though not for the reasons they hoped.

Along with Groban, and Stephen Toblowsky returning as Sandy, Victor Garber added to the guest star list as Will's father. Garber, coincidentally, was a star in the last prime time show to have a recurring musical theme, Eli Stone.

As for scene-stealing Sue Sylvester, she largely stayed in the background in Glee Episode 3, pulling the strings as her "cheerio" spies came all too close to dismantling Glee. But thanks to a few life-affirming epiphanies, the gang and Will managed to find each other again in time.

For Glee Episode 3, the big musical highlights came from the "Acafella" gang, and from the club's heavy-set diva Mercedes rendition of "Bust Your Windows" after her attachment to gay club member Kurt goes wrong. But Josh Groban himself didn't have any tunes to sing, as he was busy fending off stalkerish fan Sandy, and hitting on Will's alcoholic mother.

Glee Episode 3 further established the show's formula of tunes, an overarching message, quirky stuff, and big, ode-to-misfits final speeches to wrap things up. But this is usually the time when brand new, hyped-up shows begin to slip in the ratings, and become "the best show you're not watching"

So the ratings for Glee Episode 3 will be closely looked at, to see if it is building up the momentum from the first two episodes - although the soundtrack is downloaded enough on iTunes to balance it out.

Next week, Sue returns to the spotlight by getting her own bit on the local news, while Kurt goes out for the football team.
