We watch Glee because it's Karaoke TV. We watch for song and a chance to sing along.
This isn't an indictment on Glee's quality, nor clever conception to finally bringing Karaoke to TV - and no, American Idol doesn't really qualify as Karaoke TV, but sure comes close! I love actress Jane Lynch, and I'm really thrilled to see her prosper on a big, mainstream pop culture franchise.
But the fact is the single most compelling reason why Glee snagged our attention is that it's a show which takes some of the biggest songs and musical acts in pop history - like Madonna - or Journey with Don't Stop Believin' and Queen with Somebody To Love, and lets us Karaoke away with the bubbly cast. What's most fun is that we warble along with a truly not so musical cast. Tone deaf? Maybe not. However, it's highly unlikely anyone on Glee will become a serious singer of any note. This only fuels our own brazen vocal bravado.
Some of us out there may actually care about the cast's life dilemmas. Though aside from heartily laughing at Sue Sylvester's silly shenanigans, I highly doubt even the most geeky (gleeky?) Glee fan will remember anything other than prime musical moments. That must see Karaoke TV.
Be gleeful. Be gleeky. Enjoy Glee while it lasts. Savor the gripping "drama." But remember, it's Karaoke TV - at least to me. The music matters most. Like the most fun Glee episode so far reminds us - it's all about The Power Of Madonna.

Post a CommentWill, I'm with you on most of this. The stories are just well-executed soap formula and most of the cast has amateurish acting and singing skills, but I have to disagree that none of them will make it as a singer. I get this feeling that Lea Michele (the main singer) is going to rule the world soon: I'm talking Broadway, best-selling albums, and Academy Award nominations. Second to the Karaoke factor, I watch the show because she's just ridiculously talented.
Dunno if I'd like it, but it sounds worth checking out. Thanks a bunch! :o)
I thought Glee would be stupid but I watched it for the perfomances, then got sucked in to the storyline.
I like Glee but I don't watch it all of the time.
good write up!
Loved this!
Good job...
