Glen Campbell-My Celebrity Genealogy

My Dad Discovers Glen Campbell is a Second Cousin

Elena H
My family has followed country/pop music celebrity Glen Campbell's 50+ year career with interest, not only because of his talent, but because we are part of the same family tree.
My dad was thrilled to finally get to meet and have a conversation with him at a book signing in April 1994. The meeting was one that my father never forgot. Glen was promoting his book Rhinestone Cowboy. Although, my father hated driving in Dallas traffic, he drove himself and my mom there so that he could meet Glen Campbell. Dad also had a new book he wanted to show Glen Campbell.

The book was called "A Genealogy of the Mouser Ancestry".
It gave my father great joy to point out to Glen Campbell the entry that read Carrie Dell Stone (Glen's mother) and to trace the entry back to Margaret Amanda Mouser, who was Glen Campbell's great grandmother. Then my father pointed out his name, Jean Willard (Bill) Hamilton, and traced the entry back to Athenire Frances Mouser, who was my dad's grandmother. Margaret Amanda Mouser and Athenire Frances Mouser were sisters. That made my father and Glen Campbell's mother 2nd cousins. Although, I am new to this confusing world of genealogy, I believe this makes my late father and Glen Campbell 2nd cousins once removed. Since John and Anna Nations Mouser were my great, great grandparents and they were also Glen Campbell's great, great grandparents, Glen Campbell is my third cousin.

Glen Campbell and my father were born in small rural communities about 34 miles apart. My father was born in Hope, Arkansas in 1921. Glen Campbell was born in Billstown, Arkansas in 1936.

15 Minutes of Fame and a Gracious Celebrity
The 1st picture at the left shows Glen Campbell and my father after they spoke about their family genealogy and after Glen Campbell signed Rhinestone Cowboy for Dad. (See 2nd picture) The inscription says, "To Rev. J. W. Hamilton-Love in Christ-Glen Campbell" The postscript says, "Cleta also". Cleta is my mother's name and I am sure that not only was she the one taking the picture (note my father's head is chopped off), but that she stuck the book back under Glen's nose and asked him to include her name. She was very excited and never too shy to make sure she got her 15 minutes as close as she could come to fame. The Rev. stands for Reverend. My late father was a Baptist minister for more than 60 years.

Glen Campbell was very gracious to my father and gave an elderly man something to be proud of and reminisce about until his death in 2003, nine years after he met Glen in 1994.

Glen Campbell, who is 72 and a legendary country and pop music celebrity, is releasing a new album called "Meet Glen Campbell" on August 19.
Although, this album is made up of covers instead of songs written or previously sung by Glen Campbell, they are done in the famous Glen Campbell style. "Meet Glen Campbell" will be released on CD and as a limited edition vinyl and also will be available in digital format. The vinyl will include his mega-hit, Galveston, in its original form.

My father was very proud that a celebrity like Glen Campbell was part of the family genealogy.
I am quite sure Dad prayed for Glen Campbell during the rough places he has had in his life and rejoiced with Glen from afar during the many successes. I believe the Bible teaches that the saints can see how we are "running the race" down here. I'm sure Dad is still cheering Glen Campbell on-for his professional success with "Meet Glen Campbell" and for continuing to "fight the good fight" in his personal and spiritual life.

Tracing your family's genealogy is interesting and fun. It really is a small world. You may have a celebrity in your genealogy, too.

Elena, I am also related to Glen Campbell through the Mouser family. He is a 3rd cousin once removed. That means you and I are related also. My line is through my father, Robert Edward Craine. His mother was Ora Gerteen Rogers. Her mother was Malena "Lannie" Ellen Mouser. Her father was John Davis Mouser who was the brother of Margaret Amanda Mouser and Athenire Francis Mouser. Sadly, my father passed away August 18, 2009, of Alzheimer's. It seems to run in this line. I never got to meet Glen Campbell and have tried several times. I would like to share genealogy info with you. I also have the "A Genealogy of the Mouser Ancestry" book. I have filled in some missing information. Contact me at churley105@cox.net.

Wow that is so much fun. I am happy for your dad and you that you were able to find out this information and that you have a celebrity in your family. I found out from a much more professional genealogist in our family that we are related to President Theodore Roosevelt. They say if you go back 15 generations that we are all related, of course if you go back to Adam and Eve we are all related too! Loved the article. My best friend in high school was Jan Hamilton.

This is just a fantastic story. So glad your father met Glen and that you have traced the family connection so well. Incidentally, our family (my brother, his two teenagers, our 90 year old mother and I) will be attending Glen's concert in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia on 28 November 2009. I last saw Glen in concert back in the early 1970's. We can't wait for this momentous night out.
