Glenn Beck Using Military Charity to Fund His "Restoring Honor" Event

Jeff Musall
lenn Beck, charlatan and snake oil salesman, appears to be preying on people's desire to assist troops to pay for his big party he sees as divinely inspired.

Beck isn't the first to use a troop charity to fund largess, fellow right wing blowhard Sean Hannity was implicated as allegedly using his troop charity to pay for a very overblown overhead.

Hannity's Freedom Alliance reportedly only spent 12 percent of it's revenue on troops in 2008, and even less in 2007 and 2006. So Beck appears to be following a well-traveled footpath for right wing talkers.

Beck has already insulted the memory of Martin Luther King by scheduling his rally on the anniversary of King's speech and at the same location, trying to co-opt King for right wing fanaticism. Of course, Glenn Beck thinks he picked that date through "divine providence." Delusion runs amok with Beck.

Stephen Colbert nails Beck to the proverbial wall, saying "there is more exciting news from Casper the frenzied ghost." Colbert keeps it up, showing Beck to be a fallacious fool, saying "finally - someone is bringing Martin Luther King's movement back to it's conservative white roots."

As Beck drones on, Colbert lets loose with a great analogy - "that was like watching paint take itself seriously."

But back to the charity. To provide funding for his August 28th rally, Beck is stooping low. He has co-opted the reportedly previously sound charity the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. And the fact that the charity allowed itself to be co-opted should give pause to anyone wanting to make a donation.

If you look at Beck's 8/28 page, "Restoring Honor," you see a nod to the SOWF, including a link to donate. You can also bid at a "charity auction" for such wonders as breakfast with Beck and Sarah Palin, a scholarship to Liberty "University," and a Christian cruise to Alaska - what fun!

But of course, nothing easily seen says just what the money is being used for. You have to scroll down to the fine print at the bottom of the page for this pearl:

"All contributions made to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) will first be applied to the costs of the Restoring Honor Rally taking place on August 28, 2010. All contributions in excess of these costs will then be retained by the SOWF."

There you go - Beck is using people's emotion to pay for his little party. It may not be illegal, but it most definitely is despicable.

How sad that so many in the media have such a problem with restoring honor and turning our focus back to God. Maybe they should be concerned 500,000+ Christians turning their focus to God and getting on their knees about the direction of this country -- be prepared for some amazing changes. God does hear the prayers of His people. Don't waste your time trying to take our focus off the Main purpose. God used Glenn Beck and praise God for his obedience to this calling.

Why so angry? How about write some substance instead of sarcastic drivel?

Yep, you're right, these events do cost a lot of money to produce and if the sponsors had to pay the costs out of pocket instead of out of the proceeds there wouldn't be any events. How do you think that Sharpton's event will be paid for? Go to foundation center.org and you casn do some checking on some of your favorite charities. Look at their tax forms, and see if you don't rethink what you have just written.

I think I need an aspirin. Where does it come across as anything other than a decent 300,000+ person rally of people who unite in intent and thought? I think that even beats the differing Unions. Jeepers! Your accusations about what one man who attempts to humbly lead a deliberate cross section of like-minded people is scary. I bet you scold anyone eating a Peanut Butter sandwich in public. Get real! You would never have the guts to do what Glenn Beck has accomplished. Go get 'em BECK!

Sounds like a lot of Obama crazies writing in!!!!!!!!!!

Do you really believe that all those people donating are being swindled? They don't know that their contributions are going first to pay for the costs of hosting an extremely large event and then the rest stays with the SOWF? Why are they donating on the 8.28 Restoring Honor site? If they want to contribute straight to the SOWF they can do that on the SOWF site. Not many people are THAT ignorant to believe that those donating don't know for what cause their money is being used. We are people who can read and actually work and own businesses.

You people are beyond sad. Are you aware that the costs of the event have been completely covered? Are you leftist followers aware that the SOWF are in full support and are active participants in the event? Do facts ever get in your way of trashing those who oppose you?

Jeff, I was a professional fundraiser for 18 years with some of the biggest non-profits in the country and EVERY legitimate professional fundraiser knows, if you are spending more than 15% of what you raise on 'overhead' or 'fundraising costs', that is an organization you should NEVER give money to. Beck is fundraising his own 'needs', using the US military as a cover. He just gets more and more despicable as time goes on.

And the entire setup, if you look, is entirely misleading - and it shows just how one-sided his fans are when they won't even admit that...
