Global Vision International: Take a Sailing Vacation in Italy and Save Marine Life

Make a Difference Up Close and Personal with Whales and Dolphin

Mike Collins
If sailing in the Mediterranean Sea seems out of reach for your budget, try a volunteer program. Global Vision International offers a Dolphin and Whale Research Program in the Ligurian Sea off the coast of France and Italy. Each day you will wake to the beautiful clear water of the Mediterranean. Many people have described their experience working with dolphins and whales as almost spiritual. An up close study of these intelligent creatures will create lasting memories. Your participation will ensure a positive, lasting impact on the conservation of cetaceans for generations.

Volunteer Duties

Every member of the team will share in the responsibility of life on the boat as well as research. Cooking and cleaning are part of crew duties but there will be ample time for cetacean spotting, hydrophone monitoring and recording research data on computers. As a member of the crew you will assist in navigation and piloting the sailboat. This is a great way to gain sailing experience for future expeditions. The opportunity for gathering beautiful photographs of the world's largest and most intelligent animals. Photographs taken by you may assist in the preliminary study of cetacean behavior.

The Project

The Ligurian Sea is rich in nutrients, attracting more cetaceans (dolphins and whales) than any other section of the Mediterranean. This area was deemed a cetacean sanctuary in 2002. How to manage the sanctuary is determined by scientific research performed by volunteers like you. Your participation will assist in future planning for the conservation of these remarkable marine mammals.

Project Requirements

In order to participate in the Dolphin and Whale Research Program, applicants must be over 18, speak English and in good physical health. Extended exposure to sun and heat will be inevitable; knowing your limits before accepting this project is advisable.

Accommodations

Accommodations are on a 69 foot sailboat with shared cabins. Cooking facilities and private baths with hot showers are available.

Group Size

The crew will consist of a total of 16 people, 11 volunteers and six staff.

Duration of Project

The project runs each year from May to October. Volunteers can register for a minimum of one week to a maximum of 12 weeks.
