Global Warming and Al Gore Big in Recent News

From Nobel Prize to Oscar Nomination

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore has taken his place amongst the big news stories as of late. His film has received multiple Oscar nominations, he has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, and the American public has placed him at the top of the list of 2008 Democratic Presidential hopefuls.

Most recently, Al Gore has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in the environmental field combating global warming.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the most prestigious awards any individual person can receive. Al Gore was nominated just before the deadline ended this past Thursday. Other possible nominees include Lidiya Yusupove, Rebiya Kadeer, and Thich Quang Do, who advocate Chechen human rights, Muslim minority rights, and democracy and freedom of expression for those under house arrest respectively. A rough list of nominations is expected to be released on the 12th of February.

While the winner will most likely be announced mid-October, the actual Nobel Peace Prize ceremony will take place on the 10th of December in Oslo, Norway.

Not too long ago, a documentary film entitled An Inconventient Truth, which features Gore and his campaigning for global warming, was nominated for two Oscars: "Best Documentary Feature" and "Best Original Song."

At the official website for An Inconvenient Truth, www.climatecrisis.net, visitors can download a free educational companion guide for the film. This documentary has been highly acclaimed by many critics, but accompanything the praise, there are disbelievers. President Bush is one of them. In the film, Gore states, "I don't really consider this a political issue, I consider it to be a moral issue."

In addition to all of his work in the environment, Al Gore is also a potential candidate for the Democratic party in the 2008 Presidential Election. He has not announced anything officially, but many are urging him to enter the running.

Al Gore's success in work not directly related to politics could not have come at a better time. Taking into consideration his recent achievements, he is in the moment right now. Miscounts aside, he just might receive his chance to re-enter the White House come 2008.

If you want to see for yourself why Al Gore's work has made such enormous headlines, watch An Inconvenient Truth. Preferably before the Oscars, which will take place on the 25th of February. (If it wins, you might not be able to get your hands on a copy.) Visit the website to "Calculate Your Personal Impact."
