Global Warming and the Almighty Dollar

Beth Benson
Global warming and climate change is something that has been bringing more and more attention to businesses, us regular patrons, as well as government agencies. We have been focusing on the statistics on the rise of greenhouse gases, the increase in severe weather patterns, and also the severe heat waves. We are aware of the diminishing wildlife and marine life. We are also aware of the growing list of extinct or nearing extinction life.

We notice that when items grow scarce, the cost of that item increases not by a few pennies or nickels, but by a few dollars. This is not only the case in sea food, milk products, and meats, but I'm sure you have noticed the price of gasoline. As we see these rising prices, we like to argue and complain about who is at fault; this of course will get us no where. So what exactly is going on?

Money is the culprit for saving our planet. Recently a way to save on oil to fuel the shipping boats have been discovered by way of using a kite that fuels the ships simply buy wind power. However, due to the cost of this kite, only several ships will be equipped with them and it will take another 2 years or so before another hundred or so are given this ability or can afford this ability. Our shipping ports and industries are one of the main ways that products are delivered throughout the world. You would think that to save the climate and save the world a whole lot of money those kites would be affordable to the average man or given out as a way of helping to save our world.

This of course, is not the only scenario of how money controls and hinders our abilities to prevent global warming. It is obvious that the average individual cares about money and making some sort of profit. But it should also be common sense that saving money is a huge plus. Using my previous example, the fuel that is used to power our ships have been known to contaminate oceans and contaminate the air. Ocean contamination inevitably kills or damages marine life limiting the use of marine life caught and when in high demand, will cause a price increase. If all of our shipping vessels used this high tech kite, this will extremely lower the amount of fossil fuel use, therefore it will keep marine life happy and abundant which in turn makes the sea life and sea food buyers happy.

This is all a large chain reaction of good vs. bad. If we treat the planet badly, it will come back and treat us badly. The marine life, the wildlife, the forests, the entire planet has been here thriving for millions of years without the help or the harm of humans. Humans created money which in turn has created greed. Without the Earth, humans wouldn't be here in the first place.

All and all, I believe that we really need to re-evaluate what is more important when it comes down to "oh we don't have enough money to make that, even though it would contribute greatly to saving the world that we live in." It's really a survival of the fittest, not the wealthiest.
