Published in the journal Nature - "The findings are some of the first to show how human-produced greenhouse gases have affected global humidity levels in recent decades and could offer clues on future climate change, the researchers said."
"It is another piece of the puzzle that climate change is happening and we are influencing it," said Nathan Gillet, a climate researcher at the University of East Anglia."
Human-produced greenhouse gases? What's that? Levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases , accumulate in the atmosphere as a result of fuel-burning and other processes. Those gases help trap solar heat, like the greenhouses for which they are named, resulting in a gradual warming of the planet.
"Human emissions of gases such as methane and carbon dioxide that trap heat in the atmosphere are widely blamed for changes in the climate. Scientists say average global temperatures will rise by 2 to 6 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, causing droughts, floods and violent storms."
One of Nature's cycle's works like this: Thawing permafrost dumps tons of previously frozen organic material into lake bottoms, producing methane. The methane finds its way into the atmosphere, where it works with other greenhouse gases to trap the sun's rays. The planet warms even more, causing permafrost to thaw at a quicker pace.
In addtion, researchers also have a better understanding that, changes in the earth's water cycle, meaning the ocean levels are currently rising , will have a bigger impact on people than rising temeratures will. Many states in the USA are currently approaching major water shortages and droughts.
Georgia's Lake Lanier, the main source of Atlanta, GA water, has three months of water storage left. It's not just "on the way". Water shortages are here.
