Global Warming: Fact or Fiction

Colby Rines
There are varied opinions on whether global warming is real or not. For those who say that it is real, there have even been predictions that the World as it is now may come to a grinding halt due to the effects of environmental degradation and effects of global warming. According to this school of thought, the World will be destroyed by serious weather conditions such as a tsunami, hurricane or flooding among other harsh conditions. Despite the increased expression of such concerns, there are also those who believe that the changes in global weather conditions and patterns are just a normal cycle of events, and it is nothing unusual to cause any concern.

Considering the disparity in the two opinions, one is at a loss which one is the true state of affairs with concern to global warming. This situation has led to heightened campaigns from the two sides, each trying to prove that theirs is the genuine and true standpoint. Today, climatic change is one of the main areas of spotlight among scientists and environmentalists all over the world. At the same time, opponents of the idea that the world is faced with global warming have also come forward to argue their case that in fact, rather than warming, the Earth is on the contrary cooling down in some parts.

As a result of the divergent views, most people do not know where to stand on this issue of global warming. While proponents of global warming blame it largely on human activities, the opponents contend that it is not due to human activities. Rather, they hold to the idea that these global climatic changes and the consequences are natural patterns, which occur every several thousands of years.

For those who have chosen to believe that global warming is real, its causes are said to include pollution and gas discharges to the atmosphere from industrial activities, which has affected the atmospheric balance, hence the unpredictable weather patterns, increased earth temperatures and global warming. This, it has been argued, would eventually lead to massive desertification, rise in sea levels and a generally harsh climatic situation. On the other hand, those who do not believe in global warming simply dismiss this as an alarmist theory that holds no water.

Perhaps, it could be said that those who do not subscribe to the idea are blinded by lack of concern, bombardment by numerous reports of imminent climatic change, and a general ignorance fueled by the present day mode of life, which is mainly influenced by the media culture. Subsequently, many tend to believe what they read, see and hear from the media such that if the media reports that climatic change is real, then they would believe. Moreover, if the media does not say, then there is no threat of global warming. It is a matter of believing what one is exposed to. However, whether global warming is a fact or fiction, time to tell.
