Global Warming: Investigating Its Effects

Megan Heyer

Global warming, apart from causing changes in the weather, also causes financial loss to human beings. How to mitigate the loss is briefly explained in this article.

Global warming is the new threat the universe is facing since the recent past. As a result of weather changes have been noticed in many parts of the world. Scientists fear that if the situation is not controlled; it will cause disasters in the world. Some say that causes for the global warming is human error like deforestation, uncontrolled use of natural materials, pollutions caused by industries etc.

Effects of global warming: It is also said that many countries are already feeling the effect of global warming through noticeable changes in the weather. Noticeable changes in weather have occurred in United Kingdom (UK) where cyclones and hurricanes swept away many houses, causing heavy losses, during 2007 and 2008. The disasters in UK during these years could be an indication of what the nature has in store, if the prediction of Scientists on the effect of global warming is correct.

The Ike and Gustav hurricanes which swept UK, USA and the Caribbean islands in 2008 caused very heavy damages to private property. Some say, that global warming is manmade and others feel that it is not man made; it is a course in the nature's series. But, whether it is manmade or a natural event, man has no immediate remedial action. The remedy to tackle global warming is a long drawn process and therefore man has to learn to live with this change in the weather, at least till such time some remedy is found.

How to mitigate the loss of properties: The destructions caused by the global warming, prompted some insurance companies to form an organization called climate-wise. This organization has taken up the task of conducting research and to make analysis of potential risk of climate change, so that risks caused by global warming could be mitigated.

During a survey conducted, it is noticed that more than one third of homes in UK remained uninsured. The total value of property at risk during subsequent flooding, if any, were estimated at UK pounds 214 billion. Therefore, it would be advisable that house owners insure their house which includes structure and the contents. Those who have already taken up the policy can renew the policy updating the list of contents.

Whether global warming is manmade or not, ultimately, the human being is the sufferer. It is certainly a storm in a teacup of house owners. One can mitigate the loss, by wisely taking up a home insurance.
