Global Warming : How to Reduce Your Impact at Home

Erik Van Tongerloo
We all notice our climate is changing in the entire world. An increase of the average temperature, a decrease of the quantity snow in almost every country and an increase of the sea level are the results of this global warming. Many scientific reports warn us for the negative effects of this global warming. Many human actions cause this effect and we all need to take actions for reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Reducing your impact at home is necessary and can be done by using our energy more efficiently and will also lower your energy bills. The first thing you need to do is to understand which areas of your house you should best focus and going for green projects is recommended.

Heating, cooling, use of electricity for several appliances and lighting causes these gases which have lead to a global warming up effect of our environment. It is important we all take preventions to reduce global warming in our house.

WHICH STEPS CAN WE TAKE?

1. REDUCING YOUR HEATING AND COOLING
Reducing your impact at home requires limiting energy to stay warm in winter and cool in winter. This means you need to some research in your home if there are no leaks in your house. Mostly you will find these in the environment of your windows and doors. You can easily save energy by plugging these holes. A little bit of weather stripping can be used to fix this problem.

Insulation of your windows can be useful for preventing global warming in your home. Windows are mainly responsible for heat loss and cool loss and you can consider using thermal curtains. These curtains are five times more efficient compared with other saving features.

Installing a programmable thermostat with the Energy Star Label can save you more energy because these are more accurate than the usual ones and allow you to program the unit several times on any given day. These thermostats contain also indicators for warning you when it is time to replace your air filters and give a signal when your heating or cooling system is malfunctioning.

Installing double pane windows is worthwhile to consider. These windows have already proven to reduce energy and keep your house warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

2. REDUCING YOUR USE OF ELECTRICITY AND WATER
Your use of electricity can easily be reduced if you pay attention to needless use of this kind of energy.

* Make as much as possible use of daylight. When you have the possibility to do some work in a place in your home where you don't need the lights; try there.
* Turn off the lights when nobody is in the room.
* Turn off the television if nobody is watching and avoid using the stand by option because you are still wasting energy.
* Turn off the computer, printer and other appliances when nobody is using them.
* Use fluorescent bulbs because these lamps produce less heat and are 4 to 6 times more efficient than your regular lightening.
* Don't keep your freezer too cold and don't open it longer than necessary.
* Save water by using the shower and use less hot water. A shower saves more water compared with taking a bath. It is also recommended to take shorter showers and making use of low-flow shower heads which reduces your consumption of water.
* Use your dishwasher only when he is full loaded.
* Don't keep your freezer too cold and open no longer than necessary
* If you use your toothbrush don't let the water tap run.

OTHER STEPS

1. RECYCLING
Recycling of paper, glass, cartridges, plastics and many other items can be recycled and contribute to our global warming problems. The materials are used for manufacturing new products and saves energy.

2. ALTERNATIVE ENERGY
Do research if you can make use of alternative energy. Consider if solar energy options are possible for saving energy in your home. The costs of these investments are high but can give you a long-term benefit and reduce global warming. Solar panels and solar wind energy have proven his benefit but it depends where your home is located if it is useful to install them.

Solar panels need to be pointed directly to the sun for being powerful. If your house is located in an environment with many trees; there is a chance that you don't have enough sunlight for receiving enough solar cells.

Wind energy gained popularity during the last years but it is important to know you need an open space of 1 acre and it is recommended to ensure if it is allowed to install a wind turbine for avoiding problems with your local governments.

CONCLUSION
All these tips are useful for reducing your impact at home and maybe you will find some others because there is an endless list of energy saving possibilities in your home. New technologies provide new possibilities for a greener world and the second advantage is that you also save money by paying attention to these tips. Ensure which tips are most useful for you and start today for fighting the global warming problems.
