Glued to the Table

A Lesson in Faith

Paula Carpenter
Working this semester on an internship with the Marketing Director at the Children's Science Museum has been so much fun. I am getting to do what I love to do best: write! But, the last few days at work, I've spent my time on the phone trying to garner silent auction items for the museum's annual fundraiser. The museum's education director has begun to call me the auction fairy. The journey certainly hasn't been uneventful.

I've assured the Golf-pro at a local course that I simply wanted a gift certificate for 18 holes plus cart rental for two people....not the donation of his body for the traveling exhibit the museum is hosting.
I tried not to laugh as a member of our legal community tried desperately to remember what he donated last year, because his secretary was on long term sick leave and he had no idea where she kept things like that.
I went to pick up a donation from a local plant nursery, who in the past has always given us a beautiful gift set from their retail store. When I got there, I had to politely inform the owner that the tree he wanted to donate wouldn't fit in my SUV, and someone else would have to come get it.

Yesterday, as I was once again making contact with those who donated in the past, I got to a business whose telephone number had been disconnected. Knowing that they had moved across town since last December, I began to search for a phone book. Not seeing one in the office I was working in, I headed to Casey's office, hoping to borrow hers. Just as I spied it on top of her file cabinet I heard one of the other ladies call my name. Thinking I would just grab it quickly and head to Monika's office, I reached for the spine of the paperback book and started to turn around. It didn't move.

That's odd. Turning back, I tried to lift the phone book with both hands. It didn't budge. Casey had glued the back cover to the top of her file cabinet. Well within reach of her phone and her computer, it wasn't going anywhere without some major work.

I later learned, my co-worker had grown weary of people walking off with her only copy of the Yellow Pages. So she had come up with extreme measures to keep them from doing it again. I'm not sure what she'll do when the 2009-10 edition comes out in July of next year, but for now, there is no problem.

I never thought I would say this...but I wish I could be more like those yellow pages! .David talks about it in Psalm 62. Both in verse 2 and verse 6, David reminds us that "He only is my rock and my salvation. He is my defense. I SHALL NOT BE MOVED. Oh, to have the faith to allow God to anchor me and never move from under his protection! What a glorious promise that is.
