Gluten Free Marshmallow Rice Treats

A Review of a New Gluten Free Snack

Racheline Maltese
Celiac disease is a genetic illness that affects approximately 1 in 133 Americans. People with celiac disease cannot consume gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats that are not processed safely. If they do, those with celiac disease can summer from extremel intestinal distress, neurological problems and fatigue and may also be increasing their risk of intestinal cancers. One of the most frustrating things about having celiac disease is not being able to eat foods that seem like they shouldn't contain wheat or gluten, yet do.

Rice krispies marshmallow treats are one of those foods. Rice Krispies and many other similar rice cereals are made with barley malt flavoring, making them a dangerous food for anyone with celiac disease and also a problem with people who suffer from other forms of wheat and gluten intolerances.

Luckily, a company has finally recognized the need for a gluten free crisped rice marshmallow treat. A company called Glenny's now offers these gluten free snacks in three flavors: traditional vanilla, chocolate and peanut butter. Each gluten free crisped rice bar has just 100 calories, is low in sodium and is also kosher and organic.

Now that it's passed all the tests, you probably want to know how Glenny's gluten free Brown Rice Marshmallow Treats taste. I'll start with the best news first: the gluten free vanilla flavor is utterly fantastic, and tastes just like the rice krispy treats you remember. They texture is also good: these gluten free marshmellow treats are chewy and gooey.

Unfortunately, the other two flavors of gluten free marshmallow treats that Gelnny's offers aren't as good. The chocolate flavor of these gluten free snacks tastes like cocoa powder was merely added to the marshmallow mixture. This gives the gluten free marshmellow treats an odd chalky taste and texture. Your love of chocolate might override this, but mine doesn't. The peanut butter flavor also doesn't quite work for me and tastes more like health food than a sinful gluten free treat.

These gluten free marshmallow snacks are increasingly easy to find in stores and retail for approximately $1.25 per bar. I have also recently started seeing them in boxes of six. My advice? Get the vanilla version of these gluten free treats immediately, but skip the other two flavors. Also it's worth noting that the foil packaging on these gluten free treats can be frustratingly difficult to open.
