I have recently switched to a gluten free diet and have been searching for a quality sandwich bread. Pre-made gluten free loaves can be expensive and difficult to find in regular grocery stores. If you do find a gluten free bread loaf, it may be out of your budget.
Where to Find Gluten Free Pantry Products
I found the Gluten Free Pantry products at my regular grocery store in its tiny gluten free section for about $4. If you cannot find it at your grocery store, try a natural foods store or order it by the individual package or by the case at glutenfree.com.
Why Did I Choose the Gluten Free Pantry Favorite Sandwich Bread Mix
I wanted to try a mix at home and compare the loaf appearance, texture, and taste to my regular bread. The picture on the box looked promising!
This mix can be made using either a bread machine or in the oven. You'll need to add some water, a little vegetable oil, and 2 eggs. If you have an egg allergy in your household, you can make substitutions.
I chose the oven method and the whole process took about one hour: 30 minutes for mix and rise time and 30 minutes to bake it. I did not add any extra ingredients in this first taste test.
How Did the Gluten Free Pantry Bread Taste?
In a word, wonderful! I was pleasantly surprised at the hearty taste and feel of this sandwich bread. The texture is dense and smooth, perfect for a good lunchtime sandwich! It was not rubbery or grainy. I did not feel deprived that I had gluten free bread instead of regular bread.
I wrapped the loaf in a towel overnight and tried it again the next morning. The bread held up perfectly, was easy to slice, and tasted like white bread.
For an experiment, I made up some French Toast batter using some eggs, a little skim milk, and cinnamon. The Gluten Free Pantry Favorite Sandwich Bread actually performed better than my regular (non-french) white sandwich bread due to its dense texture. This mix makes a delicious French Toast breakfast. Just add some fresh berries!
I highly recommend this bread for anyone on a gluten free diet. It does take some prep work, but you can make it the night before and the loaf will hold up wonderfully.
