I recently bought a loaf of Whole Foods Market Gluten-free Sandwich Bread. I like this bread's texture and taste. I also like the care taken to produce this bread.
Whole Foods Market has built an 8,000 sq.ft. dedicated gluten-free bakery in Raleigh, North Carolina. A gluten-free dedicated bakery is reserved for gluten-free products only. No wheat, barley, or rye flour ever is used there. People who cannot eat gluten-containing products can buy Whole Foods Market Gluten-Free Sandwich Bread, and know that it is safe.
More and more people in the United States are being diagnosed with Celiac disease. This is an inherited disorder. People with Celiac disease can't digest the storage protein in wheat, barley, and rye. Eating these grains causes an autoimmune reaction that damages the small intestine.
Damage to the small intestine makes it difficult or impossible to absorb nutrients. As a result, many secondary diseases can occur. To prevent damage to the small intestine, a person with Celiac disease has to avoid all forms of wheat, barley, and rye. Gluten-free bread contains from grains that don't cause an autoimmune reaction.
According to the package, this bread contains nonfat milk, rice flour, tapioca starch, eggs, evaporated cane juice, canola oil, yeast, salt, xanthan gum, and lemon juice.
Whole Foods Market Gluten-free Sandwich Bread is only available at Whole Foods Market and at Harry's Farmer's Market stores.
I found it in the freezer section of the Whole Foods Market store in Birmingham, Alabama. According to Whole Foods Market website, the bread may be found in a separate display with other gluten-free foods. Someone in the bakery department will be able to locate it if you can't find it.
I have to drive 2 hours to buy the bread in Birmingham. I call ahead of time to make sure plenty of loaves are available.
The bread is not available by mail order.
This bread is heavier than sandwich breads made with wheat. It has a similar taste.
Gluten-free breads easily crumble. Whole Foods Market recommends toasting the bread. I agree. It tastes much better when toasted, and it doesn't crumble.
I use the bread in place of hamburger buns and for sandwiches and toast. I like it better than the airy-sandwich white-wheat bread commonly found in grocery stores.
Gluten-free bread tends to be more expensive than regular bread. A 1lb.12oz. loaf of Whole Foods Market Gluten-Free Sandwich Bread sells for $4.99 at the Birmingham store. The price may vary according to store location.
I give Whole Foods Market 5 out of 5 stars for the care they take to make sure their Whole Foods Market Gluten-Free Sandwich Bread is safe. Another 5 stars to them for taste and texture.

Post a CommentMe, too, May! Udi's bread is delicious, too. Merry Christmas!
I have recently bought this bread and I love it! I still get my "bread" without compromising taste and quality.
After reading your review on 7/15/2008, we got this bread and loved it!
Very thorough review-your reviews are a great help to those who have to be on special diets.
Thanks for the review.................
A stellar review for the details that readers would want to know. For instance, knowing that it costs more and tends to be a bit crumbly is important. I'd still buy it and my trust in you as a reviewer is higher because of your honesty about the pros and cons of this bread.
Great review Barbara! I'll check Whole Foods' bread out next time I get to Franklin. I had given up years ago on finding a premade gluten free bread that tasted good. The ones I had tried gave cardboard a bad name. Thanks!
Great review another fantastic job~!
