Glycogen

Laura Munion
Glycogen is the form carbohydrates are stored in the body as. While some carbohydrates are used to fuel your daily activity, some are stored in the muscles and liver to be used as needed. Endurance activities can deplete your glycogen stores.
When the glycogen stores become depleted by an activity, such as a marathon or long distance cyclying event, the body can experience fatigue. In marathon events, this is usually described as "hitting the wall".
Carb loading and carb depleting are techniques used by some athletes to manipulate glycogen stores for maximum energy and performance.
