Gmail Tips and Tricks

Phillip Chan
I have been an avid user of Gmail for 5 years and I would never go back to my pre-Gmail days. It is an awesome email service, with roughly 2 GB of free space and excellent reliability. On top of that is a whole host of neat functions and tools available with Gmail. However, many people do not take advantage of these cool features. They aren't hard to use, it is just that most people never bother to look into using them. Here are some of my favorite Gmail features, available to all users of this swell email service.

Email Address
If your Gmail email address is star@gmail.com, you can put down s.tar@gmail.com, st.ar@gmail.com, sta.r@gmail.com or even s.t.ar@gmail.com and still receive email. This is really useful if you want to filter your messages or track where certain emails are coming from (i.e. when you give out your email address). This feature is especially useful when used in conjunction with filtering, as described below. Let's say you give out st.ar@gmail.com as your email address only when shopping online. Then, create a filter that will label all emails going to st.ar@gmail.com as 'online shopping'. Success!

Filters
You can setup filters in Gmail that will take all email either coming from a certain address, or directed at a certain email address (i.e. st.ar@gmail.com) and auto label them, archive them, star them, etc. Filters are a really powerful feature and once created give a useful method of organizing emails automatically.

Multiple Addresses
If you have multiple Gmail accounts, you can manage them using one account, thanks to several addons available for Firefox used in conjunction with Gmail.

Labels
Believe it or not, some people still neglect to use the Label feature in Gmail. Unless you read and delete all of your email once read, the label feature is indispensible. Otherwise, you will probably end up with a huge 'archive' section loaded with uncategorized emails. It's really easy to set up Labels, Gmail makes this task intuitive and simple with the 'Labels' button.

Gmail is an awesome email program. These tips and hints have only just brushed the service of the possibilities with Gmail. With the addition of Firefox extensions and addons, you add even more functionality to Gmail, including using it as an external backup source (See the addon "Gspace"). Have fun and experiment with Gmail-you'll find that it's worth taking the time to get used to!

Maybe it's based on old information-They used to only provide 2GB, old time users (not new nubs) might still think that's the case.

This article is maddening. It makes a number of good points, but loses all credibility from the very first paragraph, because its facts are just WRONG--gmail provides nearly 8GB of free space, not 2. If the author of the piece couldn't get that SIMPLE fact right, why should I trust the rest of the content? Answer: I shouldn't.
