Go Green on Earth Day Start Making Small Changes

Save Money While Still Going Green

Nathan Stanford
April 22 is Earth Day, a Day where some people go out and proclaim how much they care about the environment. Just saying on this one day I am going to change my ways does not make up for the rest of the year. You can make a difference in the environment simply by making a few changes. You do not have to be a tree hugger to worry about the trash that shows up on our roads and in our land fills. Do not throw your trash on our lawns.

In 2008 NBC changed their logo to all green. Changing a logo does make people think about Earth Day. Does this accomplish change in what everyone does? People like to talk about becoming green and worrying about the environment. Action will always speak louder then words.

You do not have to be someone that stands around holding a sign to care about how much trash we make. We have heard about the barges of trash getting stuck in New York Harbor or some other place. Create a compost pile at the back of your yard. You can mix in some of your biodegradable trash. Make sure you turn it every so often. There are many guides on creating a compost pile online. The result is you can use this compost pile to add into your flower garden. The reward for doing this is that it will make your flowers look even more beautiful.

The government passes a law we have to move from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs we know as CFLS. Some day we will all change to light-emitting diode we know as LED light bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury. Mercury is already a problem in our environment. Mercury is toxic to animals and humans. Recycle CFL's because mercury is classified as a hazardous material by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Why would we move from a light bulb that may cost more in energy to one that pollutes our environment? We should skip Compact fluorescent light bulbs and move to LED light bulbs. LED's do not contain the toxic substance mercury and require less energy for the same amount of light.

Another thing you can do is to buy a water filter. You can buy a water filter just for you kitchen sink or you can buy one for the whole house. We have a water filter for the entire house. This protects our clothes from what might be in the water as well.

On April 22 I will go to work all excited that it is a Friday. The rest of the year I will buy LED Light bulbs to lower my electricity bill. Save yourself some money and buy LED's instead of CFL's.
