Five Fun Ideas for Having an Environmentally Responsible Christmas

Max Stout
This Christmas there is no need to overly incorporate plastic and other inorganic compounds into your family holiday celebration. Consider having an eco-friendly holiday season as far as possible. Here are five fun decoration suggestions to utilize for a green Christmas.

Christmas Quilt

A wonderful Christmas decoration that will remain beautiful and practical for multiple generations is a Christmas quilt. A holiday quilt can be made out of worn clothing or purchased organic fabrics. Your Christmas quilt can utilize a Christmas-friendly pattern (available at craft stores) or merely contain Christmas color blockings. During the holiday month, the quilt can be used as a glorious wall hanging or as a sporty bedspread in any bedroom. In the off season it can remain as a toasty blanket to cuddle up with.

Natural Garlands and Ornaments for the Christmas Tree

Decorating the Christmas tree with a variety of edible and natural decorations will be a fun family activity and provide an alternative to purchased ornaments. Craft a garland from various greenery gathered on a family hike. Make a popcorn chain to wrap around the Christmas tree. Bake a huge weekly batch of Christmas cookies (as healthy as possible) and "pierce" them for a ribbon "hook" immediately after removing the cookies from the oven. Hang the cookies and every night take off a couple per family member to eat. Replace on a regular basis.

Fruit Bowls as a Christmas Decoration

Instead of having decorative Christmas bowls full of high calorie candies, display a variety of colorful fruits as a Christmas centerpiece. Apples are the traditional Christmas color of red and will look lovely displayed on a bed of green pine needles. An orange can be pierced through with a few cloves in the middle of the arrangement to add some "aromatherapy" to the mix.

Make Christmas Bags or Tree Skirts

Use some organic material or recycled clothing to craft custom Christmas gift bags (which can be used for decorations) and Christmas tree skirts. Old formal dresses work really well as the material is usually quite shiny and presented in bold colors. If you sew up a tote bag, be sure and sew an alternate liner on the inside of the tote bag for reinforcement.

CFL Christmas Lights for an Accent Decoration

While wasting energy is never advisable, even for Christmas lights, there are families where no Christmas lights is not an option - they remain a favorite holiday decoration for the home. To minimize the effect of Christmas lighting plans, consider purchasing colored CFL bulbs at your local home improvement store and use them outside for accent lighting instead of installing multiple strands of traditional Christmas Lights.

All five of these Christmas decoration tips will give your home an eco-friendly atmosphere this holiday season which will only enhance your families celebration of the season.
