Go Green and Make Your Home Brighter with Natural Light

Natural light in your home can be a great way to bring a bit of the outdoors inside. Natural lighting can be used and accented in many functional and interesting ways. Functionality is one of the more important and useful aspects of natural lighting.

Skylights are a good way to bring in more natural light. Skylights can lower your electric bill by providing light during the daytime so you do not need to use as much electricity to keep your home lit. Skylights are a __ way to add a dramatic flare to any bathroom. Living rooms are made even more relaxing and have an almost Zen quality when it rains and the water cascades down onto the skylights. Skylights can be placed so that a view of the horizon is the focal point, or certain constellations can even be featured in the night sky.

Windows are present in every home and are the traditional way that natural light is brought indoors. More light can be let in by placing a sheer panel of curtains beneath the more decorative curtains and tie the outer curtains back during the day. The day the sun can provide natural light in your home if you tie back the thicker curtains that do not allow light to come through.

Natural light can be added to any home by adding windows to the outer load bearing walls of your home. Thin and long rectangular shaped windows can be added to any wall that is lacking space. An open floor plan can accent any natural light that your home lets in. The more interior walls your home has the harder it is for natural light to flow through it.

Decorative trim or wainscoting can be a decorative way to border your windows, sliding glass doors or skylights. Decorative trim can be layered for a more formal and finished look. Trim can be painted to match the rest of the trim in your house, or it can be painted a wooden color or stained in a finish that matches or compliments the furnishings that already exists in your home.
