However, after doing a little research I realized there are so many simple changes I can make in my own home to "go green." With a few simple switches you can "go green" with the lights inside and outside of your home as well.
Over the last few years fluorescent lights have changed a lot. They are no longer associated with that blinding light. Now on the market are compact fluorescent lights. The upfront costs of these lights is slightly higher than the traditional light bulb but they can last up to ten times longer. These lights are better for the environment since they emit less greenhouse gases. For myself I think the best thing about these lights is that they put off less heat. Now this summer I do not have to worry about my air conditioner and lights working against one another. After paying hundreds of dollars throughout the winter months for my electric bill I am looking forward to a slight break.
LEDs are another great green option; these lights can last an estimated 100,000 hours. Besides being long lasting they actually dim out before they die completely. It is like having lights with a built in warning for you. LEDs cast a more natural white light which is easier on the eyes.
Philips Classic is another great choice for going green. This light bulb emits a soft white light . The Philips Classic bulb is great for ceiling fans and other hard to reach places because they can last an upward of 5 years.
Going green does not have to stop indoors. Now step outdoors and turn off that huge overhead light. Instead use solar-powered lights. I have to admit when I tried a variety of different solar-powered lights 5 years ago I was not too impressed. Less than half way through the evening these lights would go out. However, many changes have been made and now these lights are designed to last longer than ever. My favorite thing about them is since they have no cords you can virtually move them anywhere. With numerous designs and price points there is an option for everyone.
In all honesty you can "go green" with the lights in and out of your home with virtually no effort. Do something good for both your wallet and the environment. Switch to "green" friendly light bulbs and sit back and enjoy knowing you are part of something much bigger than just reducing your own energy costs.
