Go Green by Working from Home

Did you know that you can go green by working from home? Naturally, the idea sounds a little far fetched, but evidence strongly supports that by choosing to perform your job from the comfort of your home, you can have a positive impact on the environment. Today, many individuals are seeking to work from the comfort of their home. This choice stems from the fact that many companies are cutting back their workforce, and others are actually closing their doors to business completely. The unemployment rates in the United States alone are completely staggering. As of May 2009, it has been estimated that nearly fifteen million people in the nation are unemployed. As a result of the shortage of jobs in the United States, several are seeking full time work at home jobs. By doing this, not only are these individuals making a positive contribution to their finances, they are also making a positive impact on the environment. Here, you will learn how one is actually going green by working from home.

The first way that you can go green by working from home is that you do not have to commute back and forth to a traditional brick and mortar job. This reduces the amount of fuel that you use in your vehicle; it reduces the wear and tear on that vehicle, as well as the amount of pollution that is emitted into our atmosphere. You can be successful in reducing your carbon footprint due to the fact that less oil is burned overall, less fuel is consumed, less time is wasted, and more time can be spent doing work that is productive and increases the household income than in traveling from home to work, and back from work to home. Not only does working at home assist in helping you to reduce the amount of damage that you are personally accountable for in the environment, it also helps reduce the amount of strain that you are under as an individual. By traveling less, you have more time to devote to your family, your friends, and other obligations.

The next way that you can go green by working at home is that you have the choice to purchase electronics and other types of office accessories that are productive in preserving the environment. For example, you can make the choice to purchase electronics that are considered to be "EPEAT Certified". There are many computers and similar types of electronics that are designed using "environmentally correct" materials. They are also designed to conserve energy and drastically reduce the carbon footprint that the user leaves behind. You may also choose to purchase items that are recycled and safe for the environment, such as printer and copier paper, pencils, and similar items. When you work at a traditional brick and mortar job, you may find that the company purchases electronics, and office supplies that are sold cheaply in bulk that are not so safe for the environment.

The next way that you can successfully go green by working at home is that you can successfully work to create an environmentally friendly office that is productive when it comes to complimenting the environment. You can elect to purchase and place safe office furniture, implement the use of green office cleaners, and reduce the amount of electricity that you use by keeping curtains open so that light can enter the room and by opening up windows and avoiding using central and window air conditioning. If you work at home, there are many different ways that you can be successful in going green. All it takes is a little creativity, and a lot of preservation and you are well on your way to reducing the carbon footprint that you leave behind!
