There are various types of engines which are designed for specific purposes. Off The Shelf Engines is one of those types which are designed for short term use only. The engine features an aluminum cylinder bore which works by rubbing against a steel piston ring therefore creating friction. It is obvious that due to the friction, they wear and tear very fast hence wont be a good choice if you are planning to use your Go Kart regularly.
Larger models of the Off The Shelf Engines feature an iron cylinder in place of the aluminum one. Although it is expensive, it lasts a bit longer in addition to featuring an in-built electric start and an alternator that can be used to charge batteries or power lights.
The other type of Go Kart engines is the Motorcycle Engines which happens to be the most commonly used although very rare to find, thanks to its versatility. They are multipurpose engines in that they can be used on Go Karts at racing tracks and also off road. They are easy to use because less modification is required while fitting in both a used or self-constructed Go Kart.
Lawnmower Engines can also be used in Go Karts. They feature a horsepower of 3-5 which tend to be pretty powerful. Although they are the easiest to find, the demerits of the Lawnmower Engines out weigh the merits. First of all, they are not as fast as the others and they are difficult to customize to fit in a specific Go Kart. While using this type of engine, you risk having piston failure. This is because the engine finds it difficult to change from a vertical pin to a horizontal pin which is a requirement of Go Karts.
Other types of engines to use in your Go Karts are the generator engines, moped engines, chainsaw engines, tractor lawnmower engines and car engines. Some of these engines adapt easily to Go Karts while others are a real challenge to get used to the Go Karts.
By and large, selecting an engine that is right for your Go Kart may be a demanding task bearing in mind that the best engines are the most rare to find. If you are a regular Karter, you can avoid all this tasks by going for a brand new Go Karter but if you must fix one, get the help of a professional.
