The first Friday in February is National Wear Red Day. This day is for all American's to wear red to let their support be known for heart disease awareness.
Cardiovascular disease takes the lives of 500,000 American women each year. It is not the myth which is believed that it affects the older male. It does in large numbers affect the American woman today. In efforts to rid the world of this myth and set out to bring awareness of heart disease that is ranked the number one killer in American women. The American Heart Association has developed Go Red Day with compassion, emotions and a social enterprise created to enable women to take charge of their heart health.
Organizers from Laurel, Mississippi, state women's heart risk starts to increase between the ages of forty and sixty. Women throughout history are not making the association between risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol. These factors increase the risk.
The goal for this movement is for women to gather together and as a whole wipe out this disease. This movement will not only challenge a woman to know what their risks are and to take action in order to decrease their personal risk it will provide them the tools necessary to maintain a healthy heart life.
In 2010, the American Heart Association had set a goal to decrease the death and disabilities from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20% and also while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans, the goal year date is 2020.
The National Heart Blood and Blood Institute (NHLBI) along with the American Heart Association and other organizations in 2003, banded together with a commitment to higher the awareness of women and heart disease. The red dress symbol had made its entry into the world as a national symbol for women and heart disease awareness. The American Heart Association has adopted this symbol to develop an alliance amid all organizations who are dedicated in the fight for this very important cause.
