God is a Buffalo Bills Fan?

Wide Receiver Takes God to Task Over Dropped Pass

Mike Felten
It is a testament to our belief in an omnipresent, all-knowing God that we even entertain that idea that God is spending his Sunday day of rest watching not only the lowliest of sparrows but also a 2-9 football team.

The Buffalo Bills would have been 3-8 if only God had not turned the hands of their wide receiver, Stevie Johnson into stone. He bobbled a pass that he had caught a thousand times before. The team lost and a disappointed Johnson was deprived of raising a finger of thanks to the heavens. Instead he began to tweet.

"I PRAISE YOU 24/7!!!!!AND THIS IS HOW YOU DO ME!!!!"

I haven't followed God on Twitter, but I guess he follows us. Mr. Johnson's disappointment and anger abated and he quickly sent out a series of tweets absolving God of all blame.

He will be forgiven. I imagine even the staunchest Buffalo Bill fan will shrug it off. They aren't going to the playoffs anyway. What does it matter in the grand scheme of the NFL tournament?

Any God would not want us to beat the distressed Mr. Johnson further. Who among us has not cursed the heavens over a dead automobile battery or a missed opportunity? We quickly remind ourselves that there are those that are suffering real loss, real pain and real hardship. There are times when even our most sincere, anguished prayers seemingly go answered. The innocent child suffers a cruel fate. The best among us are stricken down and taken away. We ask why and hope that when we bow our head it is not to tweet, but to remember our blessings.

Being a professional athlete is a glamorous occupation. It is a pain filled one. Football players surrender years of their lives. They are hobbled by nagging injuries. They suffer a loss of direction when the cheering stops. It is a trade off.

Still on this Sunday morning after Thanksgiving those in need look at an athlete questioning God over a dropped pass and see a fool. Mr. Johnson was paid $385,000 last season. How many families could live on what he earns? How many tuitions would that cover? Maybe even a life-saving medical procedure or two.

Mr. Johnson is a blessed individual. I am sure that he realizes that. We all are if we take the time between tweets to remember it
