It doesn't much matter how He did it . . . or how long it took Him, but I suppose for this essay it does . . . so here goes nothing.
From the perspective of someone who has watched bits and pieces of creation arguments, seen the evidence itself, tested the Scripture, and wondered a bit, here is what I think.
I believe that "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Thus, He created the heavens first, before the concept of time reigned our lives, and then He named them (each star) on "day" four. Thus, in the interpretation of "day", I cannot limit God by saying "twenty four hours". So, I do not know how long or how short that "day" really was. I'd venture to say that it was different than our average day at this moment in time because energy does decay as the law of entropy agrees to state . . . God could have chosen to take His sweet time with creating things so magnificent and sublime, but that does not mean to say that God cannot do it in a day.
So, there are these things called stars billions and billions of light years away. That means we're looking into the past if we take a glimpse at those gorgeous stars right now. God did not create light "in-transit", saying that He did not create an illusion when He created stars. But, isn't it also possible that God created the heavens, those stars, before He created the earth? After all, there is a period before: ". . . the heavens and the earth. Now, the earth . . ." (Genesis 1:1-2)
Then, there's the geological evidence . . . things we like to call rocks. Yes, these rocks, or coral reefs, or layers of rocks, or mountain-forms are all evidence that point to a creation that used a larger-than-twenty-four-hour day. The rock formations we see, such as in mountains, or tidal friction, point to a then (meaning long ago) 400-day year, saying that the earth was once a younger vessel long, long ago because matter, and the successive expansion of the entire universe, or galactic recession velocity, did slow down a bit (Law of Thermodynamics). Therefore, even the tree rings (via dendrochronology) date the earth to be far older than the Young Earth Creationists speculate.
So, a concern of mine for Old Earth Creationists, since I don't think my view is very far off from theirs, except that I suppose the heavens to have been created sooner than the earth, it is hard to get around the fact that a division in the faith of Christ-followers is a hampering device used by the devil to pry salvation away from those searching for Him, and even young followers of Christ, by butting the heads of Christians together. Thus, the thing that concerns me the most is that this is not a salvation issue. This cannot be used as something that takes our eyes off of the majesty and brilliance of the Divine Creator, Elohim, Who gave Himself up for us. It doesn't matter what type of creation you believe, just as long as you know Who created.

Post a CommentPraise the Lord that we do not have to understand how He created everything. We just have to love and trust Him. Thank you for so eloquently pointing that out.
