God Don't like Naked Dirt

Butch West

As an organic gardener, when I listen to the radio shows, I often hear people say "Mother nature" or "Mother Earth". One thing I have heard is "Mother nature doesn't like bare ground"

Well, the earth is not my mother and if it were, why would I want to walk all over her? The earth is the Lord's. It belongs to God. The soil or dirt belongs to him. And it is true that if you have nothing but dirt then something will always grow where bare ground is. Weeds, thorns, sticker burrs, something.

The main and best reason to be organic is to avoid the dangerous chemicals often found in chemical fertilizers and pesticides. I call Organic Gardening "Gardening God's Way." It is a natural form of gardening, but it is not perfect and some natural things are just as dangerous as the chemical ones and sometimes more so.

When Adam and Eve realized they were naked, they clothed themselves, they knew it was not natural. Scripture teaches in Romans chapter 1 that homosexuality is wrong because the man (and the woman) left the natural use of each other and went to the same-sex. It is not natural to be homosexual or lesbian, what is natural is the way God created us. Male and Female. Organic gardening is (supposedly) the using nature, gardening the natural way. As an Organic Gardener, maybe I should advise you a little on how to clothe that naked dirt God gave you.

Mulch: Mulch is not a weed barrier (though I once thought it was), it does not prevent weeds, but it holds them at bay. There are several kinds of mulch including grass and leaves.

Native grasses. In Texas, this could be Bermuda, St. Augustine and a variety of other grasses.

Flowers: Yes, plant some flowers around the edge of them trees (but do not cover the root flare with dirt, this will hurt the tree.)

Ground Cover: This seems a natural since what you are doing is covering the ground, this can be a rye grass, but not everything regarded as a weed is necessarily a weed. All a weed really is is a plant growing where you don't want it. Clover is often regarded as a weed, but clover is a soil builder. Clover will help your dirt.

Mints: Peppermint, Spearmint, Thin Mint (OK, the girl scout cookie may not work). The mints, as I understand it, are herbs, great smelling, but very invasive. But if you have a way to prevent it from growing (unwanted) into your neighbors' yard, mint can be a great ground cover.

These are but a few of the ways to cover your "naked" dirt. God created the earth, the dirt belongs to Him, not to the non-existent mother nature.
