God Forbid

Jessaka Romine

God forbid you should listen to me.

That my words might make sense,

That my thoughts might matter,

That it might be something you want to hear.

God forbid you might think of someone else.

That you take notice of the rest of us,

That you open up your eyes,

That you might see what you are missing.

God forbid you stop being selfish.

That you might sense another's emotions,

That you might share your precious time,

That you might allow us to breathe your air.

God forbid you should want to help.

That anything could come without strings,

That anything could come from the heart,

That no repayment is needed for once.

God forbid you don't hold a grudge.

That you don't create unnecessary hostility,

That you don't accept responsibility,

That you might see where you have gone wrong.

God forbid you should ever be broke.

That you truly have no money,

That you honestly can say you are poor,

That you should ever have to hold a real job.

God forbid you are ever lonely.

That you realize you have nobody,

That there is not anyone to hear you speak,

That there is not anyone who wants to help you.

God forbid you ever be a grandma.

That babysitting is not ever a chore.

That compensation in not expected,

That you want to spend time with your grandchildren.

God forbid you live your life.

That your life revolves around anyone else,

That you learn to empathize,

That you want to be a mother and grandmother.

God forbid I should ever have to speak to you.

That I should ever need to talk to you,

That I have to listen to your selfishness,

That I have to even be around you ever again.

God Forbid.

I'm starting to believe there's more to this than anybody could ever imagine. I pray that God will answer your prayers and grant you some peace to end this mess.
