God Help Us: Bush Talks About the Economy

Craig R. Withers
When you look at some of the statements that he has made over the past few months, it becomes evident that President Bush refuses to acknowledge reality. These quotes, all taken from an Associated Press wire, reflect how stubborn the president has been in denying that our economy is struggling.

See for yourselves:

On January 4, George said, "This economy of ours is on a solid foundation."

January 18: "Our economy has a solid foundation...Our economy is still creating jobs...Consumer spending is still growing...Business investment and exports are still rising."

January 30: "I hope you're confident about our economy. I am."

February 28: "That's interesting. I hadn't heard that." (When told that gas prices might reach $4 a gallon.)

February 28: "You see, if you're somebody worried about $3 gasoline and you think your taxes may be going up in two years, then it - the uncertain price of gasoline creates more uncertainty for you as you plan your future." How many of us actually make so much money that we worry about what our tax bill is going to be two years from now? Again, George is only thinking about his rich friends.

March 14: "In a free market, there's going to be good times and bad times."

March 15: "In the long run, we can be confident that our economy will continue to grow."

March 17: "One thing is for certain...we've taken strong and decisive action."

So, let me get this straight. According to our nation's leader, our economy is doing fine; he has no idea how high gas prices are (when's the last time he had to fill up); he's only worried about making sure his rich buddies don't have to pay any more taxes; and he's confident as heck about our financial situation.

God help us.
