God is Pro Choice: One Christian Woman's Belief
Might the Bible Actually Reveal a God that is Pro Choice?
Now I'm no theologian and I do not seek to put words in the mouth of my God, but I do hope to share my perspective based on what I know of our Creator. I hope you will hear me out.
First of all, the God I know is a God of free will. Notice that He does not demand that people love Him or accept Him. He loves us first and allows us to make the choice to accept that love and to love Him back. Now that's Pro-Choice.
Next, God also does not demand that we have children. Yes, he wants us as a people to "be fruitful and multiple" and He tells us that we should value and cherish our children as the blessings they are. But does that mean He demands that we have babies when we are babies ourselves, too young to properly raise them, or when we aren't ready or when we just don't even want them? That would certainly not be Pro Choice.
But I don't believe He makes any such demand. In fact, the way I see it, He has proven himself to be Pro Choice in that He has very plainly left that choice up to us ... By creating us in such a way that we cannot reproduce simply by holding hands or sharing a straw or sitting close on the couch with someone of the opposite sex. Yes, except in the most extreme and unfortunate and statistically infrequent of cases (Only 1% of the pregnancies ending in abortion each year are a result of rape or incest (Alan Guttmacher Institute, et al)), getting pregnant IS a choice and one that we have already made if there is a new life growing in our womb. We need only exercise our own free will and make the choice ... to control our own bodies, our own actions, our own passions ... to exercise choice. That is how God made us. And that is Pro-Choice.
So yes, I believe God is Pro-Choice, but once we have made a poor one, I do not believe God suddenly becomes Pro-Abortion. I believe it's clear He meant for us to have the choice of when we would have a child. I believe He made it equally clear that we could not simply destroy that child if we acted irresponsibly and wanted to avoid the consequences. I believe He is Pro-Choice as per the true meaning of those words, NOT the deceptive words of those who seek to distort language to play with our minds or to sooth the misgivings of those who might not feel comfortable with a more accurate description of the practice. That is not Pro-Choice, it is Pro-Abortion.
But yes, I believe God is Pro-Life. While it is clear He is "Pro-Choice" in the sense that he gave us a choice as to what we could do with our own bodies by giving us free will, He also told us "Thou Shalt Not Kill", a commandment He felt so strongly about He wrote it himself in stone. I believe God created each of us in our mother's womb, that He knows every hair on our heads, and about every day of our lives, before we are even born. I believe He loves us, each of us, even before we have traveled those few inches from the safety and security of our mother's womb to our mother's loving arms, whether those arms are those of our birth mother or our adopted mother.
And finally, I believe God is a God of forgiveness. I believe He made a way that we can be forgiven and restored to Him ... Even if we forget that we are loved; even if we disregard that we are free to choose and strong enough to make the right choice so we don't create a life we are not prepared to embrace; even if, at some time in our lives, we were, perhaps, deceived or hardened or blinded to the fact that the child that grew inside of us was no less valuable, no less loved by the God of the universe than we are. I believe He loves us so much that He can even forgive us if we fall for the twisted deception of what we know as "Pro-Choice". I believe He will forgive us our every sin if only we will truly repent, for there is "now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus". And that is the miracle of God's love.

Post a CommentAn interesting point, rarely discussed, is that in the Ten Commandments "Thou shall not kill." in English, the Hebrew language had several words for "kill". This one used specifically means not taking innocent human life. People against the death penalty take this English translation to mean not killing under any circumstances. This cannot be true because the Ten Commandments are followed by a lengthily section, sometimes called the Judgments of Israel, a list of crimes and punishments for which the punishment is often death. See Exodus 20 to 23.
The comments here are absolutely frightening. It's not just about the baby/foetus, it's also about the WOMAN herself.
Where is her say?
Patriarchal society unfortunately believes that they have the right to dictate to a woman what she does her own body....it's truly sad.
'Thou shalt not JUDGE'.....I believe that was part of the commandments too
I was wondering where you were headed with this one. Unfortunately, abortion has become a political issue, rather than a moral one alone. The Scriptures show that Life is Sacred. Life begins at conception. "Your eyes saw even the embryo of me,
And in your book all its parts were down in writing,
As regards the days when they were formed
And there was not yet one among them. - Psalm 139:16 (King David)
An excellent article. Though I am not pro-choice. I am in favor of setting up clinics to help raped women, with moral and emotional support, through a pregnancy. I understand that this is exctremely difficult for a raped woman and I pray for them all.
You take an interesting stance on this issue. I don't necessarily agree with you, but your point is very well articulated and argued. Thanks for being willing to write about such a hot button issue!
meant "an abortion" instead of "a abortion," sorry didn't want to sound uneducated!
Just a question: if a abortion is really such a big deal, why does Jesus never mention it once in any of the Gospels? It seems to me that he might have spent quite a bit more time addressing this issue if it was as big a deal as we're led to believe. Just stirring the pot a little, hope no one takes offense!
I saw your post in the forum & came to investigate. I'm glad I did. This article is wonderfully written & your beliefs and your writing in this article are enough for me to favorite and follow you.
Hi Becca - Thank you for reading it! I had actually used this statement, "I believe God is Pro-Choice" in a high school civics/government class I was teaching last year. I taught in a Christian school and the kids knew my political/religious lienings very well, so I introduced the notion and made those initial arguments purposely to stir debate. :) It was also, in part, to point out the dishonesty of the term "Pro-choice" as highjacked by the Pro-Abortionists. No, I don't believe God is Pro-Abortion nor am I. I believe He is Pro-life, as am I. But I also believe He gave us a choice ... about whether to accept His love ... and whether to put ourselves in a position of starting a new life ... small number of those that are a victim of rape or incest notwithstanding (a subject for another day). :)
I like how you set it up so it looked like you were arguing one side of the question but actually took the other side. Just like I did in my climate change articles... http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1693758/reasons_for_skepticism_about_global.html?cat=9
