God V the First Ammendment - the Sequel

Our Constitution Protects the Westboro Baptist Church - but it Also Gives Others the Power to Fight Back

Tim Baker
I still don't get it.

The Supreme Court has declared that the members of the Westboro Baptist Church are protected by the constitutional right to free speech and therefore cannot be prevented from holding hate rallies at military funerals. (read my first article about WBC here)

Don't get me wrong - I understand the constitution and I am fully aware of the rights we Americans-all Americans-have to say what we want to say.

It gives me the right to call these demonstrators narrow-minded, hypocritical, second-rate Nazis.
In fact it gives me the right to pen (or type - as it were) this article wherein I can express my thoughts without fear of censorship.

For the record - I think these people are a disgrace to God...and I'm an Agnostic.

The behavior they exhibit in the name of God is one of the very reasons I have an innate dislike for organized religion.

I have always had a problem with the way some people (like these whack-jobs) can engage in behavior so un-Christian and claim to have God's blessing.

As I have said in previous articles, the God I learned about would not condone hatred of any kind.

Leviticus19:17 "Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt not in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him."

Seems pretty clear to me - but perhaps Minister Phelps has an abridged Bible.

Psalms 34:13-14 "Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it."

I must be missing something.

Psalms 10:12 "Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins."

Fascinating...

I can't, for the life of me, picture Mother Teresa or Martin Luther King Jr carrying a sign that says "God Blew Up the Shuttle" or "God is Your Enemy".

Regardless of my opinion, or, for that matter, the opinion of most rational people...the Westboro Baptist Church morons will be allowed to rally at funerals until something forces them to stop. Unfortunately the Government is unable to do it, so I think it's time to (forgive me for going old skool here) fight fire with fire.

We need to band together and stage anti-hate rallies and counter- demonstrations wherever these jerks decide to gather.

If they have the right to demonstrate at a funeral - then others have the right to gather in sufficient numbers to block them out.

The Supreme Court says so.

There's no need for violence, just a show of strength to let them know their hatred and venom is not welcome while a family grieves the loss of a loved one.

If you are outraged by these morally bankrupt lunatics, then show it at a funeral near you.

Fantastic article! Good choice of verses and a wonderful call to arms (so to speak). Hope it helps...

    David,
thjank you for the comment - and you're right..the Constitution does seem to create more debates than it solves.
I hope you don't think I was denouncing it (the Constitution) or claiming the Supreme Court got it wrong.
My thought is that the people opposed to the behavior are protected by the same document and therefore have the right to rally against the WBC.

I think that the Constitution is seen as a right and blessing when it seems to permit us to do the things we want to do and as an unfair, racists, elitist and destructive document when it permits things we disagree with. Most worthwhile knives have two edges.
