God vs. Science

What is a Miracle?

Heidi Adams
The belief in God often falls under the scrutiny of the scientific eye. Scientists have been trying to disprove the belief in God for decades. Religion has been able to prevail in the face of adversity and has endured the ravages of time. The God vs. Science debate may never be resolved because there will always be opponents to both sides. However, science has failed to prove and explain the occurence of miracles. According to the Stanford Encycopedia of Philosophy, A miracle is a supernaturally (divinely) caused event - an event (ordinarily) different from what would have occurred in the normal ("natural") course of events. It is a divine overriding of, or interference with, the natural order. Medical miracles occur every day reinforcing the faith of families that believe in the power of prayer and the ocurrence of miracles through divine intervention.

One such miracle occurred in a small town in Indiana and was featured on Unsolved Mysteries. A mother was admitted to the hospital to give birth to her child. She had already suffered one miscarriage and had a still born child a couple of years earlier. Her husband, mother and sister were at the hospital with her. When she went into labor complications began to arise. To her horror, the baby was still born. The doctor pronounced the baby dead and allowed the parents and family to hold the stillborn child. The family had passed the still born child around to each member so they could hold it for a few minutes to say their goodbye's. The child was blue and had turned cold.

Several minutes went by as each family member held the baby in their arms and prayed for a miracle. Finally the grandmother held the little baby girl in her arms. A nurse came in and offered to take a picture of the grandmother and child. The family was obliged to have a small memory captured on camera. The grandmother rocked and held the baby to her chest. Then suddenly there was a gasp of air that escaped from the baby's mouth. The nurse said it was only a reflex that occurs after death. The nurse left to go get the doctor to bring her back to the room. By the time they returned the baby's color began to return to her lifeless body. When the doctor checked her for a heartbeat, she was alive and healthy. The baby came back to life from the dead. It is true that miracles occur. The doctor's could not offer any explanation as to why or how the baby came back to life. No form of CPR was given to the baby. It was prayer that brought a miracle to the family that day.

Science is based on hard evidence and fact. Faith is based on the belief in things not seen. It is true that you cannot see the wind...but you can see the effects of the wind even though it is invisible. You can feel it brush against your face, you can see it stir up a pile of leaves. The evidence of God is there. It is up to us to find it.
