A priest was home during a horrible storm. The storm caused flooding across the town. The priest was quietly praying, when a knock came at the door. A neighbor asked, "The forecasters are predicting that the flooding will continue and wash out the whole town. Would you like a ride to higher ground?" The priest told his neighbor that he would stay with the house and that he would pray for his safety.
The water began to rise even more so the priest decided to go up to the second floor of his home. While praying, he heard a knock at the window. There was a boat outside and the man inside says to the priest, "I have a boat to get away from the floods, would you like me to take you with me?". The priest declined and told the man that he would stay with his home and that he had faith in God that he would protect him.
The water continued to rise and the priest was forced to climb up on the roof. Again, someone in an airplane asked the priest if he would like to be flown to safety. Just as he told the others, he told this man that he would stay with the house, that he had faith in God that he would not die and God would protect him.
The priest drowned. When the priest arrived in Heaven and was confronted by God, the priest asked, "I prayed and had so much faith in you, why did you not come and save me?". God replied, "I tried. I sent three people to save you and you turned them all away".
I heard this story in church one day and have told the story many times. I like the subtleness of it and the meaning behind it. Not to say that miracles do not come out of nowhere but miracles are usually found around us from the people we interact with everyday.
God cannot perform all miracles on his own. He needs the help of the people on this Earth. The reason why God made human beings is so that they can be of service to him. This is why God created people with different professions, so that he had means to help everyone on Earth. So remember, we are all messengers of God and everyday we are called to help others for God.
