God's Poor Creatures

A Year of Poems: Day One Hundred and Fifty-Seven

Diane Zoller-Ciatto
How sad to see the creatures
Soaked in oily goo
When millions of gallons
Of oil still continue to spew!

It truly breaks your heart
Because animals know no better
Nor do the dolphins and fish who swim
But we all know who'll be the debtor!

How can we not reflect back
To the Exxon Valdez mess
But that was "only" a tanker
Which stopped leaking its excess!

This disaster has reached proportions
That seem to have no end
Is it Armageddon already
With damages we cannot comprehend?

And what about the workers
Who make a living in and by the sea?
I doubt that in my lifetime
We'll see an end to this debris!

So get out your Holy Books
Your tallits and rosary beads
Cause we need a Higher Power
To bring us through man's greatest misdeed!

So sad. I hope we find an alternative source of energy and a realistic means of using it soon.

It is a horrible situation for both the creatures in and out of the sea. One thing affects another. The long term consequences can not even be imagined yet.
