A 5-foot lizard has been wandering around a Riverside , California neighborhood. Animal control officers were expecting a smaller reptile when they received frantic calls from residents describing a Godzilla -like lizard. Upon arriving on the scene animal control officers themselves were startled at the size of the lizard.
Animal control went to work with their catch pole, looping the lizard which then began hissing at the officers. Nonetheless officers subdued the Black -throated Monitor lizard and placed it safely in their truck for transport to the shelter.
Black Throat Monitor lizards come from a group of carnivorous lizards with the largest being the Komodo Dragon which can grow to 10-feet, and the Crocodile Monitor which can also reach this same size.
It is perfectly legal in California to own such a pet. It's not yet known if the lizard was put out or if it wandered away from its home. Not something I'd want to find in my backyard let alone my home.
