GOG.Com Review

Good Old Games for a Great Price

Aaron Doll
GOG.com aka Good Old Games.com launched November 2008, promising to provide cheap DRM free downloadable classics that worked on both Windows XP and Windows Vista. Right now GOG.com has over 100 classic games and is always working to add more. "New" (to the service) games are added almost every week along with a sale or other promotion every weekend.

Buying a game on GOG.com is a very easy and convenient process. You just need to find the game by either browsing through the collection with their very easy to use filters or by searching by game title. Then you add the game to your cart, pay through Paypal, Visa, or Mastercard and start downloading it. GOG.com offers you the option of either downloading it through your browser or using their download manager program that allows you to pause or queue downloads. Once the download is finished you just double click the file and it will verify the file integrity (so that you won't go through the installation progress only to have the game not work) and then install. Since all the games have been extensively tested on Windows Vista and Windows XP, they are guaranteed to work. If for some reason they don't you can contact their technical support, which is very fast and knowledgeable. If even that fails they do offer refunds.

The best thing about GOG.com is that every game on the service is DRM free, meaning you can download as many copies to as many different computers as you want. You don't even need to be connected to the Internet once the game is installed, unlike services such as Steam. While this system does have the potential to be abused, since most of the users of the site are "old school" they don't abuse the privilege.

Another great thing about buying a game off of GOG.com besides the convenience of it is the extras you get with the game. For example, with my purchase of Fallout I got the in-game soundtrack, the original soundtrack, an avatar, the Fallout Bible, the game manual, a printable controls reference card, artwork, and two wallpapers. These extras are really nice to have, and when you consider that the game itself only cost me $5.99 it really shows how great a deal this is.

GOG.com is an amazing service with tons of high quality games for great prices. Did I mention it is still only in beta? Once they officially launch the service, GOG.com will be an even better value than it is now.
