Going Back to School After a Layoff

What You Need to Know About Going Back to School After a Layoff

Kristy Martz
The question on many American's minds after a layoff is, "What do I do now?" Should you search for a new job with the other workers experiencing a layoff? Or should you go back to school after a layoff?

Should you go back to school after a layoff?

It depends. If you already have an adequate degree in your field, returning to school probably won't do much to help you get a new job. However, if you have less than a bachelors degree, going back to school during your layoff can open up new opportunities.

What are the benefits of going back to school after a layoff?

You can take classes to brush up on what you already know. New classes on your resume will let prospective employers know that you utilized the time during your layoff to better yourself and keep up to date on any changes in your industry. You also have the opportunity to test out a new career path during your layoff by taking classes in an unrelated industry.

What are some concerns about going back to school after a layoff?

If you believe you can easily get a new job, going to school after a layoff may prove problematic. If you are taking classes during the day and get a new job in the middle of the semester, how will you handle school? So, if you want to go back to school, but are worried about this issue, consider taking online classes or night classes.

Should you get a degree in your current field after a layoff?

Again, this depends on what field you were in. Health care, accounting, and technology degrees are hot degrees since these jobs will continue to be highly relevant, even through the recession.

How do you pay to go back to school after a layoff?

Check to see if your state offers grants or aide for workers who have experienced a layoff. For instance, Michigan offers 2 years (up to $5,000 per year) of paid tuition as long as you pursue a degree in a high demand field.

Can I really go back to school after a layoff? I haven't been to school in years.

Colleges know all about non-traditional students, especially now that so many people are going back to school after a layoff. Discuss your concerns with your academic advisor. Perhaps you just need to brush up on your paper writing skills. There is help for that.

Will going back to school after a layoff guarantee you a job?

Nothing can guarantee you a job after a layoff. However, completing your degree or taking classes during your layoff will put you above other equally qualified job seekers who have not taken time to further their education after their layoff.

My BFF went back to school after a layoff and was trained better in computers than me, who had 20 years working experience under my belt! Sometimes Unemployment services will pay for this -- she went for free.

Nice job looking at both sides. It is a great idea for some, not so much for others.
