Going to the Cabin Alone Just Isn't the Same, but I Sure Got a Lot Done
Tangent Lodge Starts to See Some Finishing Touches
It was a busy weekend at Tangent Lodge. Mary chose to stay home, it seemed shopping ranked higher than working at the cabin after 11 weeks straight of heading out right after work Friday evening. For me, seeing progress at the end of a days work remodeling, just brings the final goal that much closer.
There's pro's and con's to going it alone. Waking early means I can get right into it, no danger of disturbing anyone at 5:00 AM when I fire up the table saw. The nearest person is a quarter mile away. I eat better and I eat less, both things I should be doing all the time. I planned my main meal by putting a couple pork ribs in the crock pot about 6 in the morning. By mid-afternoon I was plenty hungry and dinner was all set.
I must say I got a lot done what with no interruptions, and working until I was either hungry or had to go to the bathroom.
On the other hand, later in the evening the house seemed pretty empty. Me, myself, and I didn't make for much in the way of interesting conversation, and eating alone didn't seem worth the effort.
I had two choices this weekend. Either more sanding and taping sheetrock joints, or everything else. I went the miscellaneous route and surprised myself with the quantity I managed to accomplish.
Simple things like hanging pictures in the little bedroom added a homey touch. Installing the ceiling fan and light fixture in the living room made a big difference in bringing the room closer to completion.
Installing the bedroom door and door latches/knobs, which happened to match the trim on the woodstove. Even the fireplace tools set have the same brushed nickel matching the rest of the room. Though the walls aren't ready for paint, I had to trim out one of the doors just to see how good they will look.
Getting ready for winter a wood splitter was added to the tool chest. In no time the sections of red pine I had cut a few weeks back were shortened, split, and stacked alongside the fireplace. Oh a few of them made it into the firebox as well, it was the coolest weekend of the season so far.
The motor home was winterized and closed up for the season, maybe next year it will see more use. I could go on, but you get the idea. I stayed busy right through the weekend and the place looks much nicer for the effort.
Next weekend we'll have our first overnight guest. My sister is coming to checkout our progress. I made a special effort to clean up the place real nice since I was there alone and the Mrs. wasn't there to give me the Good Housekeeping seal of approval. Things will be back to normal next weekend, no shopping allowed.
