Going Green with Skin Care Products

Tracy DeLuca
Many commercial skin care products are made using harsh chemicals, synthetic ingredients, preservatives and dyes that can damage your skin over time. Not only do they damage your skin, but they damage the environment as well. By choosing to use skin care products that are homemade or made from all natural and organic ingredients, you are making a healthy choice for yourself and the environment. However, it is not always easy to know which products are truly green and eco-friendly.

Green Skin Care - DIY

Until the 1900's, skin care products were all homemade and for personal use. The best way to know what you are putting on your skin to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize it is to make it yourself. That way, you have control over the ingredients and the processing. You will be able to add and subtract ingredients as needed and target the different areas and problems of your skin without having to purchase expensive products. By using safe, natural ingredients you are able to understand their impacts on your skin.

To find easy recipes for Do It Yourself skin care products, you can search the internet or the book store. There are also numerous DIY skin care articles written by Wendy Rose Gould as well as other sources available here on Associated Content.

Green Skin Care - Organic and All Natural Commercial Products

If you prefer to purchase your skin care products already mixed and ready to go, there are a rising number of "green" products on the market. However, it is important to read the ingredient label of any product you purchase, even if it states that it is "all natural" or "organic". There are no regulations placed upon what "natural" means with beauty products. It is important to purchase skin care products that have a large majority of natural ingredients and very few, if any, synthetic ones. Many products that you can purchase in your local grocery store that are labeled as being made with "natural" or "organic" products may only have a tiny percentage of truly natural ingredients. They are then processed and packaged using chemical and synthetic ingredients. In order to ensure that you are purchasing a truly green skin care product, read the label. If you cannot pronounce an ingredient, chances are good that it is not natural. Then, visit the website for the parent company and check out their information.

You can search for "green skin care products" and "eco-beauty products" to find companies that are environmentally friendly. Several companies that offer wonderful green skin care products are Eco-Beauty Organics and How On Earth. One of my favorite companies that produces Earth friendly skin care products is Burt's Bees. All of their products are made from as many natural ingredients as possible and detail that percentage on their labels. Another great thing about Burt's Bees products is that they are available in stores around the country, not just on-line.

Green Skin Care - Sustainable Packaging

When you are deciding which green skin care products to buy, pay attention to the packaging as well as the ingredients inside. A truly green and eco-friendly product is going to be packaged in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. Inferior and mass produced packaging that is not made using recyclable or biodegradable materials is going to negatively impact the environment. Glass, recycled paper and recycled plastic materials should be used in the packaging of your green skin care products. This sustainable packaging will help the environment as much as the natural, organic and green ingredients within the packaging.

Homemade skin care is good. But for great organic skin care certified to food grade, try the world's first full line - cold distilled herbs, organic botanical perfumes and even home care products. Visit www.MiTrueOrganics.com to learn more. 10-20% your orders by purchasing online (except first order. It is advisable to place one small order the first time). Try it, you will be hooked for life.

Excellent article. I recently stumbled upon a home recipe for eyemakeup remover that contains only canola oil, olive oil, and a third readily-available oil I can't remember at the moment -- when I try it, I'll let everyone know how it works! =D I use all natural bar soap shampoos and white vinegar on my hair and my hairdresser was surprised at how healthy my hair is (I have an article up on this topic). No chemicals down the drain, and saves a ton of money too!

If the products are good for the environment they have to be good for you!
