Going Green Tips for Homeowners

Energy and Money Saving Tips for Home Owners

Randy Inman
I will share some going Green tips for your house. I was a little late in getting interested in the Green Movement because frankly I am against most liberal causes, but this one makes sense. I did already do this article offering going Green tips for outdoorsmen.

Going Green with your house saves the other type of green we love so much. Energy costs are ever rising and saving energy saves money. Another aspect of the Green Movement I support is the conservation of water. Look around you and you may notice we don't have as much water as we did a few years ago. Streams in my area are drying up and this scares me. So some of my going Green tips for your house are aimed at conserving water.

Having an attic tent installed will save you on your energy costs. Attic tents help seal air leaks and makes your heating and cooling much more efficient. The attic tents are pretty affordable in my opinion and will pay for themselves in lower energy costs.

My 2nd going Green tip for your home is to go organic on your yard (and garden if you have one). A good organic based yard does not need much if any watering from the home owner. It may take some time to get a good organic base to your yard and you need to consult a specialist in this.

Using rain barrels are a great thing for the going Green home owners. Water saved in barrels under your gutters can be used for anything short of drinking and washing your dishes. Some homes owners even have cisterns set up, which are underground tanks to store rainwater.

One of the many tips on conserving water from waterusewisely.com is to use a broom to clean your sidewalk, rather than a hose. You save water and also get a little exercise. As saving water is my biggest Green Movement favorites, this is a good one.

New energy efficient appliances can pay for themselves in reduced power bills. May sure your dryer vent is clean and working at it's best. Also don't ever, ever use flex hose on a dryer as this will cause a fire.

I hope you found these going Green tips for homeowners useful and be sure to check out the sources below for more information.

How To Reduce Your Energy Bills / Energy Conservation Begins at Home

Imagine leaving a window open all winter long -- the heat loss, cold drafts and wasted energy! If your home has a folding attic stair, a whole house fan or AC Return, a fireplace or a clothes dryer, that may be just what is occurring in your home every day.

These often overlooked sources of energy loss and air leakage can cause heat and AC to pour out and the outside air to rush in -- costing you higher energy bills.

But what can you do about the four largest "holes" in your home -- the folding attic stair, the whole house fan or AC return, the fireplace, and the clothes dryer?

An attic tent seals leaks in the attic and saves you energy costs.

What is an attic tent? The flexible dryer vent stuff is not evern supposed to be sold any longer.

Great article, Randy. And may I emphasize your warning about 'flex' vent pipe. Do Not Use! Many residential fire origins are traced to those flex dryer vent hoses.

These green tips are useful indeed, love the tent idea brother. I usually conserve throughout the year as a conservative I believe it is appropriate to be a good steward of the earth. For the special event of earth day & in acknowledgment of all the Al Gore enviro-arsonists I will get 1000 watt green colored flood lights and when the world goes dark..I'll light it up ;-)

Good advice! Never heard of the attic thing.
