Going to an Interview? Go Green

Ericka Spradley
Going green has become a lifestyle for so many. It takes a conscious effort to be concerned about environmental conservation as well as improvement of our environmental state. Did you know for every ton of paper that is recycled the following is saved: 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil and enough electricity to power the average house for six months?? Something as simple as changing the light bulbs in your home, deciding to recycle, or using public transportation for your work commute can make a big difference in our environment.

Organizations across the globe have implemented conservation strategies in an effort to go green. Those strategies include: using fewer amounts of paper, installing automatic dispensers and lighting, and turning of computers when not in use. These steps are great, but I found myself thinking of what else I could do as an individual, especially from a paper elimination standpoint. Those few moments of reflection allowed me to see that I've been using more paper than I should, especially when I prepare for an interview. I print several copies of my resume, cover letter, etc for my portfolio and after the interview; I mail a very nice thank you note! Although these things are professional and necessary, there are alternatives.

- Electronic portfolios can be used instead of a paper portfolio for your next interview. You can include a professional photograph of yourself if you desire, along with your resume, cover letter, and references. Not only can you send this information electronically, you may have a competitive advantage in comparison to other candidates. I'm sure hiring managers can appreciate having a candidate's paperless information in one place, which ultimately makes the process more efficient.

- Electronic thank you cards are an alternative if paper elimination is your goal. Sending a personalized thank you note will certainly leave a favorable impression, so please take the time to do so after your interview. There are instances where you may not have a physical address to send a paper card and e-cards are your only option, which is perfectly acceptable.

Please know that I am not suggesting that you show up empty handed for your next interview. You should absolutely have a flawless resume as well as a stunning cover letter to present. I am simply offering alternatives such as printing on the front and back your paper instead of multiple sheets or purchasing recycled paper to use for your printing needs. Simple, but effective steps such as these will not only save the environment over time, but can also help you secure your next role.
