"Going to Jail" Popular New Craigslist Posting

Craiglist Posters: Some Are Going to Jail

Zane WaltZ
When I was young my grandmother scolded me for bringing up politics. "There are two things you should never talk about" she said, "politics and religion". Contrast her time many years ago with some of the ads on Craigslist these days. Jail seems to be a somewhat popular theme on the classified posting website.

It is not uncommon to encounter someone posting on Craigslist selling some, or all, of their belongings because they are going to jail, or someone in their family is going to jail. My grandmother would be shocked to learn that some people who use craigslist.com share this information on a classified website. Perhaps she would also respect their honesty.

Some Craigslist posters want to wait for you to get out of jail like the person who posted this headline on the Austin craigslist.com site "Available: 1 musician's girlfriend". Among the nineteen things she says she will "uncomplainingly do" include number sixteen "lend you my car" and number three "wait for you to get out of jail whether I am sick or not". She doesn't seem to want much although she says that "some gas money would be cool".

Another poster on the Houston Craigslist wants to buy Hannah Montana tickets. Part of the pitch to get you to sell them your tickets at a price of only $50 to $75 is that it will keep you out of jail. The Houston craiglist.com posting urges you to sell the tickets "so you don't have to stand in the hot parking lot selling them for face value or less and risk going to jail..."

On Chicago craigslist.com someone will sell you a jail. "Antique Jail Cell - $2500" reads the ad. In an effort to help sell the jail cell they note "Would be a good dog pen".

Recently I noted the following post of someone on the Minneapolis craigslist.com site asking only for a car or a job "DESPERATE FOR WORK PLEASE HELP - $1". The poster went on to explain what happened to them and why they were in jail.

"I got charged with a low class felony called operating without owners consent a misunderstanding between myself and someone else, I borrowed her car so that I could get to work one night but while at work a few people didn't show for their shift and my boss pretty much told me that I had no choice but to work late. I tried calling this person to let her know what happened but she didn't answer the phone. About an hour later the police showed up and took me to jail...".

At the time of this writing the poster of this item appeared to be reachable by email from craiglist.com, should anyone like to offer the poster a job.
