Going Out on a High Note: The Last Season of Seinfeld on DVD
A Review of Seinfeld Season 9 DVD Box Set
Chock full of laughs, outrageous moments and funny characters, Seinfeld Season nine is a cavalcade of comedy. Here in this season, bare witness to the final misadventures of Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer. Watch as these beloved characters with the minutia of loving in New York, from Shaving with butter to playing with a grown woman's collectable toys. This season also has the infamous Backwards episode "the Betrayal." In this episode, as the events unfold backwards, which can be seen forwards as a special feature as well, we see Elaine drag Jerry and George to India for the wedding of her college rival, Sue Ellen Mishky, while Kramer tries to step a wish ahead from dropping dead. Other classic episodes included in this season are "The Frogger" were George Costanza attempts to save his legacy, his high score in an old Frogger video game and "The Cartoon." In a struggle to understand a the latest editorial in the New Yorker Magazine, Elaine makes one of her own, only to find out she has subconsciously stolen an idea from a Ziggy comic strip. Although some episodes are better than others, they are all still funny and enjoyable to watch and are timeless regardless of the fact that Seinfeld was a show in the nineties. The show itself builds up to a climax with the last two episodes, the first being a clip show looking back at all the best moments from the nine years of the show. The very last episode, written by Larry David who returned to end the show, brings back the memorable characters that appeared through out the nine years of the show. Of course the Finale ends an unforgettable and unexpected twist bringing the Emmy award winning show to a close.
The special features included in the Seinfeld season nine box set are excellent and compliment the show well. There is the "Sein-Imation," classic scenes of the show re-imagined in funny little cartoon shorts. Other features included are audio commentaries and interviews of some of the shows creators and actors. Accompanied by same episodes are collections of deleted scenes and blooper reels left on the cutting room floor. Then there is the documentary title "The Last Lap" were the writers, producers and actors talk about their memories and feelings over making the last season of the popular show. Last but not least in the special features is the excerpt of the roundtable, reuniting the stellar cast, Jerry Seinfeld, Julie Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards with Larry David in a conversation about the impact the show had on television reminiscing over making it. With about thirteen hours of special features, this boxed set of Seinfeld season nine offers another dimension of entertainment for a little show about nothing.
At the end of Season seven of Seinfeld, Larry David the shows head writer and co-creator, left the show moving on to other projects. With Larry David's departure, Jerry Seinfeld, the star of the show, took full control and was able to maintain the level of comedy Seinfeld was known for. However, in the ninth season, Jerry Seinfeld decided to end the show, while show was at its highest level of popularity. Now on DVD, every fan of that little show "about nothing" can finally complete their collection and relive the fun and laughs of the outstanding Seinfeld Season nine. Any true fan of Seinfeld should find it in them to acquire this outstanding gem of Television.
