Going to School Overseas? Take These Things Into Consideration

SJD
It seems that more and more people are deciding to attend school overseas these days. Many people do this for their postgraduate degrees as the competition can be very stiff to get into the school of choice for postgraduate degree programs. It can be an amazing opportunity to attend school overseas, but one which still holds responsibilities and tough decisions on the road ahead.

Australia seems to be a popular destination as does Ireland and England. However, deciding to go to school overseas can be a tough decision to make, and one which takes great thought and preparation.

  1. Cost - Tuition costs are often more costly for international students, so this must be taken into consideration. Living costs of course are another important factor to consider. It's important that you plan for the higher costs when moving overseas.
  2. Transfer of your Program - Always make sure you consider whether earning a degree in another country will make you eligible to use that degree in your home country. Not all degree programs are transferable.
  3. Visa - You will most likely need a student visa. However, if you are being sponsored under someone else than you will need to consider what you are eligible to do under that visa.
  4. Pets - Do you have any pets that you would take with you? If so, make sure you start early with the process as it can be a timely one depending on the country you are importing to.

Of course there are other factors to consider as well. Many people find it hard to adjust when moving overseas and can experience feelings of sadness and loneliness. This is natural and normal, but it helps if you prepare yourself and expect this to occur. This often fades once you adjust to your new life and begin meeting people and making friends.

Culture shock is another factor which can affect many people moving to another country. The severity of this however, often depends on the country in which you are moving to, and the difference in culture from your own home country. Again, preparing and expecting this helps you, and it too will pass as you adjust to your new country.

However you look at it, moving to a new country can be a difficult adjustment. However, keep in mind that it can also be a great adventure. You can learn many things about yourself and the world when given such an opportunity. It may be scary and it may be hard, but do yourself a favour and take advantage of it. Enjoy it to the fullest because it's an opportunity you may never get back!
