Going to the Spa: Here's What You Need to Know

Different Things Spas Offer: Massage, Facials, and More

Summer
One thing spas offer are massages. But there are a few different kinds and it's important to know the difference.

Swedish Massage
This is the most common type of massage in the United States.
Massage therapists use long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil.
If you've never had massage before, this is a good one to try first.

Aromatherapy Massage
This is massage therapy with the addition of one or more scented plant oils called essential oils.
The massage therapist can select oils that are relaxing, energizing, stress-reducing, balancing, etc.

Reflexology
Reflexology is sometimes called a foot massage. Reflexology involves applying pressure to certain points on the foot that correspond to organs and systems in the body.

Hot Stone Massage
Heated, smooth stones are placed on certain points on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy centers in the body. The massage therapist may also hold stones and apply gentle pressure with them.
Hot stone massage is good for people who have muscle tension but prefer lighter massage.

Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The massage therapist uses slower strokes or friction techniques across the grain of the muscle.
Deep tissue massage is used for chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems, or recovery from injury.

Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a form of Japanese bodywork that uses localized finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture meridians.
Each point is held for for 2 to 8 seconds to improve the flow of energy and help the body regain balance.

Questions About Massages:
Do I have to be naked?
No. If any place makes you completely disrobe, you don't have to go there. Generally, they will ask you to disrobe to your comfort level. Many people wear a swim suit or keep their underwear on.
Do I have to tip?
In spas, it is proper to tip 15%.
Can I talk to the massage therapist?
Generally people just relax or nap. However, if you are cold, uncomfortable, in pain, or have questions about the massage it is ok to speak up.
Is it ok to request a girl or guy therapist?
Yes, whatever makes you comfortable is important. If you do not care, they will just assign someone to you.

Other Things Spas Offer

Facials
A facial deeply cleanses and maintains the skin by exfoliating dead skin cells.
A facial involves a few basic steps: cleansing, exfoliation, massage, extraction of blackheads and other impurities, and application of products targeted to your skin type.

Salt Scrubs
A salt glow exfoliates your skin. It also hydrates your skin because the salt is combined with oil and usually some aromatic like lemon or lavender. The application of the salt is followed by a shower and an application of body lotion.

Vichy Showers
A Vichy shower has five to seven shower heads, which pour water onto you while you're lying on a cushioned wet table. During a Vichy shower you are usually draped with towels: one between your legs and for women, one across your breasts. You can wear disposable underwear. This usually comes after a salt scrub.

How much does it cost to go to a spa?
Massages are generally $50-$75.
Speciality massages are generally $75-$100.
A European facial is around $40-$70.
A salt scrub or body wrap can cost $60-$110.
Spas also usually offer packages of treatments and sometimes they include lunch.
